Ohio State House: The center portion of the floor symbolizes U.S. history as of 1860 when the floor was laid. The center stones represent the 13 original colonies. The first band represents the land of the Northwest Territory; the second band represents the land acquired from the French in the Louisiana Purchase; and the third band represents territories gained following the war with Mexico. The 32 points in the starburst represent the number of states in the Union at the time the floor was laid. The final band represents the U.S. Constitution, which binds the nation together.
