A star is a big object, usually made of gaseous material, that, under it's own heat & pressure, fuse it's lighter elements into heavier ones, releasing energy in the process.
Most stars, like the sun, are made up of a lot of hydrogen, but also have some heavier elements that were left over from other stars. Our sun fuses hydrogen into helium. Some, bigger stars can fuse the helium into Carbon, and if the star is big enough, Can fuse the Carbon into Calcium, etc. Elements lighter than and including Iron can be created in the cores of stars, and still release energy.

Most stars are big balls of hydrogen with a sprinkling of some heavier elements at the center. The gravity of all that gas squeezes it into an average density about half that of water. In the center the pressure is huge, enough to force hydrogen atoms to fuse into helium. That releases heat. Most stars can burn this nuclear fuel for billions of years.

The pressure inside it is so great that the atoms fuse together to make helium.
(hence the name fusion)
This generates a ridiculous amount of energy which is why we get light and heat ;)
