When you open the door, the interlock circuit that powers the magnetron tube (produces microwave radiation) drops out. It is safe to open therefore at any time.

The word radiation is overused.
Light is electromagnetic radiation.
Radio waves are electromagnetic radiation
Satellite signals are microwave radiation
Microwave oven radiation is no different than sunlight, except, it takes less exposure time to get a burn.
Since, the power dissipates as the square of the distance, as long as we stay outside of the microwave oven, we will be fine.
The microwaves are turned off before, the bell rings.
So feel free to grab the door at the 1st sound and stop that awful buzzard noise.

Many food package instructions require you to open the microwave door halfway through cooking and rotate the product a half turn before continuing the process. Manufacturers are required to be sure the microwave oven shuts off whenever the door is opened, for safety. Because microwaves travel at the speed of light they are gone instantly whenever the door is opened and there should be no danger from radiation.

The buzzer does not start buzzing untill the microwaves are turned off. You needn't wait, provided it sounds and looks like it normally does when done (fan, light, and humming off). Someday, the first lawsuit will settle in favor of an injured consumer who's microwave did not stop emitting microwaves when the door was open during cooking, due to a faulty interlock door switch. I don't want it to be me. Call me paranoid, but I only crack the door open and wait till it looks and sounds like it's stopped before opening all the way.

Only if it is an Acme Corporation microwave. They also make the "wings stay on"/"wings fall off" switch next to the headphones switch on some airplane passanger seat arm rests. Also, the buzzard only rings if you leave fresh meat out for too long. Even then, it usually knocks on the door with its beak (often being too short to easily reach the door bell).

The instant you open the door, it opens the switch that powers the radiation emitter. Only if you deliberately defeat the safety switches can you get it to generate microwaves with the door open.
NOT recommended that you defeat any safety devices.
PS, buzzards are birds that eat rotted carcasses, buzzers are things that make noise.
