It takes 9 to 10 times to erase that disk before it becomes unreadable. Even then, a good forensic lab (FBI/NSA) can read it. You should remove the hard drive when you sell or give away a computer. Either install a new hard drive or pass it on without one. The new owner should understand this. BTW, All these programs people are talking about for wiping a hard drive clean. I will bet any money I can still read that drive.

The software packages on sale which claim to remove are NOT 100% safe, trust me I have worked in the file recovery field for a long time.
The safest way is to remove the hard disk and physically destroy it (smash it up with a hammer.)
Then simple fit a new hard drive, they are cheap enough nowaday and you can safely re-cycle your PC.

All the people that said use DBAN are correct, it will allow you to wipe your hard drive using your choice of many sanitizing methods that will erase/sanitize your hard drive making any data unrecoverable , then simply reinstall the operating system and drivers and your all set.

He/she means they are going give it to someone else. You dont need to smash it or open it up. The other answers here sound like the CIA are going try and get it. All you have to do is restart your comp. Then during the restart time when HP is starting up, their should be some information on which button to press to erase date. EX; for my pc its F1 and it says it before starting your pc(sometimes you have to hold down), However i dont know about mac since im a pc.

If you have a genuine copy of Windows, wipe the HDD clean using the disk from boot. Make sure you take anything off that you want to keep cos there is no going back

I know its drastic, but I was told the only reliable way is to go inside, remove the hard drive and either smash it to bits or bury it in the ground.....anything else is suspect.

DO NOT listen to the people who say to format, this does NOT remove, it only overwrites, and this can be easily retrieved. The data is not lost.
Use DBAN, it destroys, destroys, and destroys some more, and then the disk is clean to use. :)

I would advise going to a professional so that you know your hardware is completely wiped out.
