I'm looking at the book as I answer and I can inform you that it has been called "the greatest allegory ever written." An allegory is not a religious fable. It's a style of writing using fictitious characters or events to put over a point.

John Bunyan wrote it while in Bedford jail (England) and the book was first published in 1678. It is a story of the trials and tribulations that beset Christians as they journey through life. The version I have makes reference to some 500 scriptures used by Bunyan in his notes along with some 200 direct quotations from the Bible.

The story is as relevant today as it was in 1678 and I'm on my third re-reading of it.

because it is? It is a fanciful tale that somehow is supposed to help people see the way of salvation. I found it quite objectionable.
