It can mean 'young woman', a woman old enough to marry, and it can mean a virgin. In whichever use, the word 'almah' which is used, is not used without the connotation of 'virgin' attached.

According to The Women's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets, Barbara Walker writes that at the time virgin meant unmarried to a man. She also writes about a moon goddess named Al-mah, (Divine Mother) and her priestesses also called alma. She goes on to say that in some temples there would be "virgins" who were consecrated to the temple. The virgins weren't "known" by men, but a priest would "stand in " for a God, and ritually break the maid's hymen. They were still considered virgins as unmarried women serving the temple. If a pregnancy resulted from the ritual, the child of that union would then be considered the issue of God, not of men, and be trained as a priest or priestess, and consecrated to the temple.... She puts forth the idea that Mary may have been an alma, and that her son would have been literally considered the Son of God, and she would have still been considered a virgin.......

Tuberoot brings up an important point, saying the word could mean 'young woman'. In fact the word in Hebrew could mean that. The Greek translation of the Old Testament, used by Jews outside of Palestine and by many in it, translated 'almah' as 'parthenos' which, with all due respect to the Women's Encyclopedia of Made Up Ideas, meant virgin. Matthew read Isaiah in Greek, and saw the fulfillment of that prophecy in Mary and Jesus. It would have been a lot easier for him to use Isaiah in Hebrew, because then any young woman would have worked.

Like all the other gospellers, Matthew trawled through the Old Testament searching for texts that could be interpreted as "prophecies" about Jesus. In Matthew 1:23 we have one of those texts from Isaiah 7:14.

That's all there is to it. Matthew wasn't really interested in what it said or what it meant --- just as long as it seemed to be prophetic, that was all he was looking for.

This means being with child, without having layed with a man. It is called immaculate conception.

i'm attempting to elect what you're extremely asking. i understand which you elect to dig deeper than the obtrusive answer on the exterior. although, i won't have the capacity to decipher your actual reason in this question. The account of Jesus start is recorded in greater suitable than one place. Luke and Mark the two have comparable bills as Mathew. The e book of Mormon additionally includes the comparable prophecy some virgin conceiving and baring a son, whose call could be Jesus, the Son of God. that's the essence, or on the guts, of Christianity. confident, it extremely is actual. in spite of the fact that if it extremely is not actual, then all Christian sects and denominations are rendered futile and ineffective. Are faith is a moot element. I, for one, can not settle for that option, and function felt the confirming peace of the Spirit that it extremely is definitely actual. i won't have the capacity to instruct it in a scientific way yet in my coronary heart, i understand that it extremely is actual.

Emmanuel is John the Baptist, who ate lucust and honey, and was to prepare the world to receive Jesus. A virgin is a woman that has never had a child, she is waiting for her first born to be born of God as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, John, and Jesus were, the first begotten children born of God the Father, and were sons of the spirit called "man"

The true meaning of Matthew is just as it states literally. Mary would be a virgin, and she would be impregnated with Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
