my father regularly talks bad about people behind their backs, and he'll NEVER say to their face what he says about them behind their back.. He's 73
It just affects my trust in him , I always wonder what he says about me to others if he says bad things about others to me all the time.

That can go both ways. People may say worse things about him than he does about them.

Life is way too short to worry about who is talking about you behind your back, whether its your relative, your best friend or even someone whom you dont know. We are all creatures of habit, and to a certain extent we all do talk about others behind their backs. At the end of the day, it doesnt matter how much of a saint or a sinner you are, people will still gossip. Its all up to you on how much you let it affect you and upset you. At the end of the day all that matters is what you think of yourself, and being happy and confident in yourself and who you are as a person. Even if your dad does talk about you behind your back, dont let it affect you, because all you are doing is giving him power over you and your emotions, and at the end of the day, the only person who has the ability to make you feel bad is yourself.

Your father's 73. Cut him some slack... He's probably having weird feelings, mixed thoughts, anxieties and doubts, you know? Anyone who's at that age deserves to be respected and accepted, if only for the fact that they're our elders. Not to say that backbiting is bad, but if a 73-year-old said nasty stuff behind my back, I don't think I would get all enraged, I'd just let it pass :)
