Also, where are they? Of course there are dozens of conflicts raging around the globe, but almost all of them seem to be of the guerrilla variety of warfare, or some other irregular type. I'd put both Afghanistan and Iraq into the "irregular" category myself. The only one I can think of that could be classified as conventional is the ongoing civil war in Sri Lanka. Can you think of others? Thanks!

The Tamil may use guerilla tactics, but so did the Japanese in WWII and nobody would claim that was a guerilla war. The Tamil have a navy and an air force, modest though they may be, and in my mind that turns it into a conventional war.

I forgot about Ethiopia/Eritrea. That's definitely conventional when it's on. Interesting suggestion about the Koreas, although I think they've been in a "ceasefire" for too long to enter into the discussion.

Oh India and Pakistan are a good answer too! Also China and India sometimes skirmish around their disputed border zones.

Sri Lanka is also a gruilla war.

Ethiopia and Eritrea are at a ceasefire, but that is still technically one.

North and South Korea are not officailly at peace yet, again just a cease fire

India and Pakistan are in a Cold War.

Most conflicts are internal, as you noticed. Sri Lanka is an internal conflict, you have one ethnic group fighting another within the same country. The Tamil resort to gurilla tactics.

Edit...
There still isn't a frontline and it is the same country. If Tamil was a second country, then it would be a conventional war. The Tamil have no aircraft, no navy, no standing army, they are a gurilla force that the conventional army of Sri Lanka is fighting.

I was looking online, and Eritrea and Ethiopia is the only listed Conventional War currently as well as India and Packistan's cold war.

Another to add would be Russia's occasional attacks into former republics as well, but most of those also bog down into gurilla wars.

((I havn't heard about a Tamil Air Force or Navy- news to me))
