Hey, rukrym! I hope you had a nice holiday... :)
For me, I really liked "Little Earthquakes" and "Under The Pink". The songwriting on both albums is solid. But when I want to listen to Tori, 9 times out of 10 I put "Little Earthquakes" on - I think there is a slightly more organic feel to it.
Either one would be a good start, though. Whatever you pick out, I hope you enjoy it!

OK. Between them, everyone seems to have recommended all her albums, except her probably-best-forgotten juvenalia 'Y Kant Tori Read', and her weird covers album 'Strange Little Girls'. So, there's your answer, really - they're all recommended listening. You're really asking three questions, though - what is her best album (Boys for Pele), which albums would you recommend to a newbie (Little Earthquakes, Under the Pink, Scarlet's Walk or The Beekeeper), and what's a good starting point (the anthology 'Tales of a Librarian'). Y'see, most of her albums are nothing like the others, so you could do worse than buy/download 'Tales...', then work out which songs you really like, then acquire the albums from which the songs were taken, and branch out that way. Or, you could start with 'The Beekeeper', as it's current, then work backwards from there, or start with 'Little Earthquakes' and go forwards. It's a crying shame that so many of her great songs have only ever appeared as b-sides on her various singles, and these tend to fetch silly money. Somebody mentioned her MTV Unplugged appearance, and it's also a shame that that has never made it onto cd. But there y'go. Hope you find Tori to your liking!

Probably 'Little Earthquakes'. It's got some of the more well-known stuff on it like 'Crucify' and 'Silent All These Years' and 'Precious Things'.
Tori Amos is consistently good but this album is probably more listener-friendly than some of the later ones ('From The Choirgirl Hotel' seemed to move in a completely different direction on a lot of the tracks - slightly more dance orientated whereas LE was a much more personal album).

Obviously it's Under The Pink. Trent shares in the vocal duties with Tori on Past The Mission. However, you shouldn't miss Little Earthquakes either. Get both albums, call it a day and I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Hey Rukrym - I had no idea this question was posted :)
For whatever it's worth, it's easier for me to list my top favorite
Tori Amos songs, and from there, reach a conclusion of which is my favorite album (of the only four I own). So, it's a short list.
Precious Things (Little Earthquakes)
Space Dog (Under The Pink)
Cornflake Girl (Under the Pink)
Caught A Lite Sneeze (Boys for Pele)
Past The Mission (Under The Pink)
Winter (Under The Pink)
Wednesday (Scarlet’s Walk)
God (Under the Pink)
Crucify (Little Earthquakes)
She is one of my all time favorite lyricists. And from my list, you can tell that “Under the Pink” is my favorite Tori album :)
Happy New Year to you :)

Just to reinforce a point already made here, her first album 'Little Earthquakes' was very unique for its time. It is a solid intro into Tori world. It's a very personal record, and it shows lyrically.
I also liked 'The Beekeeper', an album of hers that seemed to fly under the radar.

I particularly liked :~
Little Earthquakes
Under the Pink
From the Choirgirl Hotel
Scarlet's Walk
But for a new listener, it may be best to start with her 'best of' album :~ 'Tales of A Librarian'.
This one includes some of the best songs from her 'not so good' albums, as well as the hits.
But I'd say definately get 'Under the Pink' as well.

Little Earthquakes is one of her best.
I don't agree that "From the Choirgirl Hotel" was dance oriented. The only song that has a dance feel to it is "She's Your Cocaine." It's also my favorite Tori album, so maybe that's why I'm defending it so much.
Scarlett's Walk is very good as well.

I like Boys for Pele the best, but if you are a beginner start at the beginning with Little Earthquakes, although Y Kant Tori read is her first album I have never heard it and cannot recommend it.

I would suggest, like many of the answers above mine, that the best one to start with is "Little Earthquakes". It was the first one that i bought and i only knew a couple of songs from it when i did. After i listened to it from start to finish, i thought "WOW!!!!" and played it again. That was 13 years ago and i still listen to it every now and then.
