Sun screens and sunblocks protect your skin from the harmful effects of UVA and UVB.radiation. There are two types: Chemical and Physical blockers. Benzophenone ; a chemical blocker is the most effective agaisnt both UV rays.

Physical blockers
Physical blockers are effective at protecting against both UVA and UVB radiation. The two most common physical blockers are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. These agents are the near ideal sunscreen as they are chemically inert, safe, and protect against the full UV spectrum. Their only drawback is their poor whitening cosmetic appearance when applied.

Yes, you can still tan. A word of caution; though!. I used to suntan a lot . Now I regret it. I have a lot of sun damage spots on my arms in my old days. to contend with. You're better off using those tanning sprays. They are a lot safer.

It depends on the kind of sunscreen used and how frequently u apply it.For eg. if u use SPF 15 it will protect u only upto 150 minutes and after that u have to reapply it.Also, apply it a little time before going out .We must also apply sunscreen on a cloudy day because though some of the rays don't reach us b'coz of clouds but there are still some which reach us.

yes, you can still get a tan with sunscreen on. there are 2 kinds of UV rays (UVA and UVB). UVA rays are "aging rays" and UVB rays are "burning rays." good sunscreen blocks them both. however, sunscreen doesn't block 100% of UV rays, and you can still tan through it, while reducing the dangers of suntanning (skin cancer, wrinkles, sun spots, etc.) Since it does block some rays, however, you won't tan/burn quite as much. the higher your SPF, the less likely you are to tan. If I'm not mistaken, dermatologists recommend that you use at least SPF 30, anything less than that doesn't block enough harmful rays and isn't healthy for your skin.

I've been told that a tan gotten through sunscreen lasts longer, but I'm not sure if that's true.

yes you will still get tan.

i know this because i don't get tan without sun-screen.
if i don't wear it i get sun burnt, and if i do, i get a beautiful golden brown tan.

Sunscreen protects your skin from the UV (ultra voilet) rays the sun gives off.
