NEVER fight if you don't have to, its stupid. You should never look for a fight with anyone. Why potentially have a black-eye or broken nose and look like an idiot when it could be avoided? Remember, no matter how tough you think you are there is always someone tougher just around the corner. Ive followed this unwritten rule all my life and i have never been in a fight outside the ring. Your dad is completely right. You should only fight if you are in danger yourself ie if you are attacked or hit etc. Just because you posses the ability to fight properly you should never use it unless a very last resort, how do you know the guy you are starting on isn't a martial artist?, you don't know.

If you are talking about fighting in the ring then i think you should speak to him about it, you could possibly agree with your dad for you to join a boxing club and get professional training, and maybe start fighting when you are more experienced.

I was trained to fight at a very young age by my father and my oldest brother. My father gave me these rules of confrontation:

1) Do not EVER start a fight

2) If somebody tries to start a fight with you, walk away.
run if you have to.

3) If there is no way out of it, of if somebody lays their hands on you, Hit hard, hit first, and remember, there is no such thing as a fair fight.

Basically, what my dad was saying is- Just because you know how to fight, it doesn't mean that you should.

"Fighting" is only noble and "right" if it's for "self-defense" of yourself and others when attacked...

Knowing how to fight, and being courageous enough to do it when a bully is picking on someone, is important...but...

Being smart enough to see a "fight" brewing from a mile away...and taking steps to avoid violence...is the noblest and wisest thing to do...

We have a "brain..."

Which is the best weapon of all...

But occasionally...a gentleman is forced to be violent...but the rules are this...

1. Never strike a child, female, or some male smaller than you...and never strike first...

2. Don't try to "maim," just try to "discourage..." and never hit someone when they're already on the ground...

3. A giant right cross to someone's nose will usually be sufficient to "discourage" them from further activity...

4. The true noble warrior...finds "peaceful" means to settle disputes...violence should only be used as a last resort...in life-threatening situations...

That's stupid then. Why put you in boxing and not let you fight? Well, maybe he doesn't want you to get hurt, which could mean that he doesn't think you're a good fighter, which means that he doesn't have faith in you and really just means that the whole boxing training thing is just to keep you out of the house and away from him.LOL just kidding. Uh, well, you have a pretty good question, though. "Why can't you fight???"

Never a good thing to fight is good enough but if you are trained then you know what you are doing in the eyes of the law.

Not only are you more capable of inflicting harm it also means you knew what you were doing and very very responsible for your actions.

well first of all, it's simply wrong.
second you could get into more trouble simply because you've had boxing training, which means you are considered a "deadly weapon" (don't let that boost ego, its a crappy technicality with a play on words) under the laws eyes.
and thirdly, boxing is a sport for men who fight for skill; not simply to bash heads in. If you call yourself a boxer, then keep it in the ring.

also...you could get your *** kicked, not everybody follows the rules (like not using legs, or throwing, or any high velocity attack towards your crotch).

fighting is totally different from boxing, boxing is controlled in a ring whereas fighting is just two people knocking ten bells out of each other your dad's right it's better to walk away if you can,at the end of the day is there any point.

He probably told you this so you dont go out looking for a fight, pick the wrong dude and get your face smashed in. I think you shouldnt go looking out for a fight but there are idiots there who will so its good to know how to defend yourself.

your dad is right but some times you can be pushed into a corner and have no choice but to defend youself and it's better if you know what you are doing.Always remember one hit in the wrong place and you could kill some one,It's not worth it.
