This behavior is not limited to atheists, but to anyone whose belief in their own version of the "truth" is vulnerable or on shaky ground. Many people who find themselves angry or combative when questioned about the validity of their views often share a common characteristic: They aren't firmly planted in the belief. That anger you see is more of an effort to convince themselves than to convince others.

Christians, Jews, Buddhists, agnostics, Muslims...anyone can fall victim to this sort of behavior when they're not fully resolved in their beliefs.

Honestly, I have no idea. How do you know somebody is defensive and angry here?
I have answered more than 1000 questions. I have never even been slightly irritated. A few times there was some fun.
It might be a good idea you give us a few examples of
- atheists becoming hotly defensive AND sorely angry
- questions about our reason/logic
We love questions about reason and logic, especially if it is yours. I have not seen much reason and logic from the other side of the street the last weeks.

Christians believe illogical things too. They tend to completely ignore the facts of history about the origins of their church, and just assume that what they have been told or believe is true. If you are truly a believing Roman Catholic, then you LITERALLY believe that the wine and the wafer for communion services turn into the ACTUAL blood and body of Jesus in a process called "transubstantiation", which is not very logical at all, primarily because it doesn't - it was always meant to be symbolic, and not taken literally. Atheists tend to actually include their arguments in their answers - where's yours? This is just an accusatory question with no evidence listed to back it up. Try again.

And as far as Christians not being "judgemental", ever hear of the Inquisition? Witch burnings? Religious persecution against the Jews and anyone else that they didn't agree with? Christians are quite capable of being very "judgemental" as they are people, and people sometimes do that.

Lots of people speak about religious fundamentalists, so we are used to this term.

But there are atheist fundamentalists as well.

Fundamentalism is not a matter of a religious belief or disbelief.

Is a matter of insecurity, egoism and fear.

And anybody whose beliefs are based upon these factors will most certainly burst into spontaneous combustion when questioned about this.

would you be defensive if I said "God's not real"

use your logic and show he's real then I'll beleive you.

My soul is not particually troubled as I do not try and sow the seed of my religion. I am sorry that your book binds you to that beleif. Aethists are free, and we have such an understanding because of reasoning / logic.

p.s Why are YOU so defensive??xxx

Some do some don't and probably for the same reasons Christians get angry when their beliefs are hammered.

I think anyone gets defensive anytime someone disagrees with them. Different people get more or less defensive depending on the issues in question and their own unique personality.

It shows that Atheists are not different from those who sing the virtues of religion.

People of all faiths get defensive when you question the reason/logic of their beliefs.

Why do you fear and decry them so much?

Christianity amounts to about 20% of the world population while all the other faiths and atheists make up the rest. All of those beleive in science and evolution.

So who is out of touch with reality here? Even the Pope acknowledges evolution but no doubt you think your god was to stupid to be able to use it as his tool!!!

Why do you accept medicine and education but eschew anything that you do not like?

If ignorance is bliss you must be ecstatic!!!!

Well in my book reason and logic and are better than supersition. Without reason and logic there is no posibility of discussion just mindless assertion of points of view.
What I cannot understand is the number of Christians, I don't think I've seen any other faith group do it, complain that the use of reason, logic, and facts is unfair.
