I have a beautiful new cat and she seems intimidated by males (my hubby and stepson - household members) but not by females (friends visiting, etc.). She was a stray (vet says about 3 yrs old/she is also recently spayed) - is it possible that she had a bad experience w/ a male - she runs away when she hears them talk (I'm thinking the deeper voice) and she's skittish when someone's wearing sneakers or boots (male or female)? Don't know anything about her history. Anything to get her to come around to them? They both love cats, but she won't warm up to them. She'll only come to me, sit beside me, and they can only pet her if I'm there petting her too. She's very affection w/ me and brings me all the toys, etc., and will only sleep on my side of the bed kind of thing. They're away most of the day and I'm with her, so I'm thinking she's just more familiar w/ me - but any insights appreciated. Thanks!

Not necessarily. I have a female that prefers my hubby and will sleep with him when I am at work (work midnight shift) and will snuggle with him before me. And I have a male that is terrified of my hubby and stepson.

I think it is how they are socialized as kittens. May be that she came from a home where there was only females. Or worst case, a male has been abusive in her past.

Just go slowly with her. Have hubby and stepson approach her quietly, while calling her name in a soft voice or whisper. Have them feed her or give her kitty treats. Hopefully, this will help her see that they are okay.

Purrs to you and kitty.

possible she had a bad experience, but more likely not socialized to males early in life. Males tend to be louder, have deeper voices, and move more suddenly than female. All of this makes animals nervous. Just be quiet and patient. She will come around

That's how my cat is she always sleeps with me and she hisses at anyone who trys to touch her unless im there. I think that they just might warm up to just one person, but my cat is a calico and it might just be the type too. She's a female and she doesnt like males that much either come to think of it. I hope this help. ^_^

Cats are teh way they are. She might over time get rid of whatever fear she might have of men, but there's no guarantee. It's possible that she was abused by men, so her reluctance to warm up to them is understandable.
