Car spoilers are completely for show on all commercial vehicles. The provide absolutely no increase in performance and acually can decrease fuel economy by the added drag on the car. This is especially true of front wheel drive cars. Downforce on the rear wheels slows the car down in all instances except racing where the power in the car is ridiculous compared to the weight of the vehicle.
Normal commercial vehicles it is completely for looks.

A spoiler is an automotive aerodynamic device whose intended design function is to 'spoil' unfavorable air movement across a body of a vehicle in motion, usually described as turbulence or drag. Spoilers on the front of a vehicle are often called air dams. Spoilers are often fitted to race and high-performance sports cars, although they have become common on passenger vehicles as well. Some spoilers are added to cars primarily for styling purposes and have either little aerodynamic benefit or even make the aerodynamics worse.

On commercial cars, spoilers have no use. The function of a spoiler is to keep the car on the ground and from flipping. In high performance or exotic vehicles, spoilers are equipped, that is because these cars are so light and the speeds they reach would flip the car if it wasn't for the spoiler. So therefore, any commercial car with a spoiler, is probably some punk kid that wants attention directed toward his/her car.

Car spoilers are aerodynamic additions that are normally mounted on top of a car's trunk or positioned under the front bumper. Car spoilers make a car unique and stand out in a crowd. Car spoilers also improve the car’s performance and sometimes stimulate its resale value.

In most instances a car spoiler doesn't do much, but enhance the aesthetics of a car. In high performance vehicles and racing applications, spoilers car be very beneficial. They provide downforce which puts pressure on the rear wheels (or front wheels in some instances) to create traction at higher speeds. All this depends on the location of the spoiler and the angle of which it is cutting the air. Put simply, the faster you go, the more downforce is created (to an extent) and like 12pleze said "keeps you glued to the track".

In everyday driving the spoiler is more for show. in racing though the spoiler keeps the car glued to track ,aerodynamically makes air go over car and hold down. Also usually the functionlly used ones are adjustable to aide in car turns on track and keeps stable. Can win or lose a race.

It adds a good look! But the main reason is it adds aerodynamics and for example when traveling at high speeds it will keep the car suspended on the ground producing a break when the car would start to rise. Also in drag racing it produces a break keeping a grip and can help accelerate your car better. But also, just theyre customization and look cool!

Maintaining an efficient speed is an important factor in fuel efficiency. [7] Optimal efficiency can be expected while cruising with no stops, at minimal throttle and with the transmission in the highest gear (see Choice of gear, below). The optimum speed varies with the type of vehicle, although it is usually reported to be 35 mph (56 km/h) or higher. [9][10][11][12] For instance a 2004 Chevrolet Impala had an optimum at 42 mph (70 km/h), and was within 15% of that from 29 to 57 mph (45 to 95 km/h). [11] The U. S. government 2005 Fuel Economy Guide includes a plot showing the optimum between 50 and 55 mph (80 and 89 km/h) for an unspecified vehicle. [13]

Hybrids typically get their best fuel efficiency below this model dependent threshold speed. The car will automatically switch between either battery powered mode or engine power with battery recharge.

Road capacity affects speed and therefore fuel efficiency as well. Studies have shown speeds just above 45 mph (72 km/h) allow greatest throughput when roads are congested. [14] Individual drivers can improve their fuel efficiency and that of others by avoiding roads and times where traffic slows to below 45 mph (72 km/h). Communities can improve fuel efficiency by adopting speed limits [15] or policies to prevent or discourage drivers from entering traffic that is approaching the point where speeds are slowed below 45 mph (72 km/h). Congestion pricing is based on this principle; it raises the price of road access at times of higher usage, to prevent cars from entering traffic and lowering speeds below efficient levels.
