All Christians accept that their God is a selfish God. That's imperfection at its best.

First, your belief that this commandment means there are no other religions besides Christianity is mistaken since the commandment was given more than a thousand years before the birth of Jesus.
The commandment was given to the Jewish people who, at the time, were probably the only people who believed in only one God. The people of the world around them were all what we would call pagan in that they worshipped many gods. (A sun god, so the sun would rise every day... a rain god so it would rain and the crops would be fertilized... etc.) God was trying to "cement" it into them to worship Him alone, and not go off and start worshipping a rock because it appeared to look like Elmo or Big Bird... you get my idea.
The deeper meaning which can be applied in our lives today, assuming one believes in God, is that nothing in our lives should take precedence over Him. He should be #1 in our lives.
For example, it doesn't mean that one should not strive to climb a corporate ladder of success, but that one should not do so by sabotaging a co-worker, or at the expense of a marital relationship.
Or, if you have a lot of money, it doesn't mean you have to give every cent to the poor; but if your TV breaks, do you really need to get a 150 inch plasma? Get something a little smaller, and use some of that money to help the poor, or some worthy charity.
One might argue: "Well, shouldn't I love my wife/husband/child more than God?" No. Loving God first helps you to love your wife/husband/child even better.
Get it? Nothing should come before God in our lives.
That's the meaning of this commandment.

People created other gods when they grew away from the real God. In this passage, He is saying that He comes first, before any other gods, which need to be put away. It's not selfish--the pantheism that so many love was a group of fickle gods whom did what they wished and had to be appeased--and there was no free will under this scenario! Under the real God, there is free will and you can choose what you will do. (And it's the God of Abraham, and includes Christianity, Judaism and Islam).

There are no other Gods...who are actually God. There are many false gods who are: figments of the imagination, lusts of the heart, etc. In one sense, your god is whatever you worship...money, power, sex, fun, etc-so there are no true atheists. A true atheist has NO god. EVERYONE has at least one god they worship...even if it is only themself. MOST people have SEVERAL gods...themself, money, power, fame, glory, sex, other pleasure, etc. You are absurd to think that you believe there is no God, as that would mean that YOU were the highest life form in the universe. NOTHING could be more absurd that that. The command means you are to worship no other gods but God...not: yourself, or money, or power, or sex, or fame, or Baal, or Thor, or Venus, etc. There are plenty of other religions. but they are all false/ mythological. God has a right to be selfish, and He does not worry about your opinion. He made you. You did not make Him.

I always took that commandment to be pretty literal. The Israelites had just fled Egypt (which followed their own gods), and were about to encounter the residents of Canaan (who likewise had their own gods) when they were given the 10 Commandments. The commandment was not to worship the other gods. You would think that a God who had just parted a sea and rained plagues on the mighty Egyptian empire wouldn't need to fear competition from the local deities, but hey...

It means you are not to worship statues, material things in life, if you do you get your mind off of God and then get into sin.
What is wrong with God wanting you to just love Him as your God, no other so called god gave us his son to die for our sins. Statues and material things can't love you back, God can.
Look at it in the natural scheme of things, you can understand a man and woman not wanting their mate to love someone else besides them, you want them to be faithful to you.
We have two choices love God or love Satan, God gives us a free will,He doesn't force Himself on us. If anyone thinks it is selfish of God to want us to love only Him, what can a Budda do for you, or the so called sungods or a concrete statue.
God doesn't want a religion with us, you can make a religion out of anything, a religion is something you practice. God wants a relationship with us, He wants to be our Father, God created us to be a family with Him.
I notice most people make the mistake of thinking religion and a Christian is the same thing.

Christians believe that the Holy Trinity is One God .
1 John 5:8
testify in heaven: the Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one.
and Jesus said in
Mt 28:44
19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
in the NAME not NAMES

It means that you shall have no other thing or being that acts as a god in your life. This includes baseball, sexy women, fast cars money, fame, the Simpsons and MTV gods of any kind.
