The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (aka NATO) was formed in 1949, after World War 2. Contrary to what some people may think, NATO is not the militant wing of the UN, although the treaty does mention the UN Charter. (Check this out: http://www.nato.int/docu/basictxt/treaty.htm)
I found this on NATO's official website: "The fundamental role of NATO is to safeguard the freedom and security of its member nations by political and military means." It was not formed just to counter the former USSR, but any potential aggressor, so NATO has not outlived its usefulness.
For example: On 12 September 2001, less than 24 hours after the terrorist attacks against the United States, NATO declared the attacks to be an attack against all the 19 NATO member countries within the terms of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
I think you're right that its main purpose is military defense, but it isn't cowardess, it's just good business. Metaphorically speaking, if you have a black belt in judo, you'd rather keep your friends around to discourage a bully from picking a fight than to deal with him yourself even if you could tear him to pieces on your own because you'd have a big mess to clean up.
You might find this interesting:

What Is the purpose of it?
Dude, where are you from? How come you don’t know this…Watch CNN, and you will see where they are and what are they doing. Who do you think is in Iraq?
NATO – North Atlantic Treaty Organization
NATO has successfully ensured the freedom of its members and prevented war in Europe during the 40 years of the Cold War. By combining defense with dialogue, it played an indispensable role in bringing East-West confrontation to a peaceful end.
Based on common values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, the Alliance has been keeping everybody in line since the UN has gotten “softer”.
The first major thing they did, after the cold war, was in 1999 when they bombed Serbia, (if im not mistaken) resulting the end of Milosevic era…and the first democratic (in the true sense of that word), in Serbia.
The only thing I can not let go is that they can intervened in Bosnia in 1991, and stopped the war, but I hope they learned that mistake. Even though it is peace in Bosnia, they still have their presents by just keeping few armed forces in the country (as just in case, which is ridicules, but that’s my option)
Since we are in “the present”, they have a huge spread all over the world, but mainly in conflict zones like Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo and some African states.
In a nut shell, when the world wants to intervene,(in some hot-spot) they can not sent “The us marines”, so they formed the “Uni-army” consisted of all major countries, and what do you know…its called NATO.

It is for mutual defence and NATO is currently in action in the Afgan theatre. NATO still exist because as an example say the French were overrun with Crazies who wanted to shut in women, execute homosexuals and Jews. Without NATO, they would suffer a great deal while their allies organized the logistics to save them , reference the first and Second world wars for and example of this, with NATO intact the logistics to defend or liberate France are readily available and it can at least shorten the suffering of the French people if not completely prevent it. Had NATO already existed before WWI a million soldiers wouldn't have died over a small ten mile stretch of land. Until the world is stable with people all over the planet able to make choices for themselves instead of Dictators making the choices for them NATO is going to be needed.
Another great example would be what America did after winning WWI, we pretty much gutted our military and reduced it size because we didn't have the foresight to realize that we would have to use it again in the future and ya know what we needed it and it took the entire country going on rationing and all industries converting to rebuild our military in time to actually stop Hitler, and even at that, his tactical errors had a lot to do with us winning.
It is better to have something when you don't need it than need something when you don't have it.

The birth of NATO has nothing to do with the Former Soviet Union. It is the miltary section of the UN. It's purpose is to prevent mad rulers from killing their own people or attempting to rule the world. It is for the citizens of the Earth. THat means you!

There is no purpose other than:
1. To intimidate weaker countries.
2. To steal others oil.
3. To topple regimes and replace that with a suitable one.
4. To create a market for their good that are not purchased by most countries.
5. To satisfy their ego.
6. To keep up the conflict in the different parts of the world so that they can still sell their arms.
NATO created terrorism. NATO funded and trained Osama Bin Laden. Now NATO wants to kill him.
When Osama was fighitng against the Soviets, NATO hailed him as a Freedom Fighter. Now that he blew up the WTC, NATO calls him a terrorist.

Officially, to watch over Europe's back yard. In actuality, to contain Russia, which is proving to be no less a threat than the Soviet Union.

With Team Magnificent Seven?
From Team Allied Forces from after world war two?
With the Liberation of Freedom for the good of mankind?
With their creation of peace on earth goodwill to men from after world war two?
What do we expect them to do out there?
After the creation of peace on earth goodwill to men?
Do we go and mess around in the creation of loss of peace on earth goodwill to men?
