The Best Garlic Mashed Potatoes’ (Serves 8)
- 6 Cups Peeled Potatoes
- 8 Garlic Cloves
- 1 Teaspoon olive oil
- 1/2 Cup Cream
- 2 Tablespoons Butter
- Salt
- Freshly Milled Black Pepper
I bet you’re wondering what it is that made this mash so perfect. We’ll it’s a combination of a few key ingredients and cooking methods that really brought out the flavor. The key ingredient is of course garlic, which must be cut about 6mm (1/4 inch) from the top. It is best to then rub olive oil, salt and black pepper over the exposed surface. The garlic needs to be then roasted in the oven at 215 degrees Celsius (425F) for about 25 minutes. After the garlic has cooked and you’ve let it cool, peel the skin off of it.
Next its time to cook the potatoes. The potatoes should be cooked in just the same way most potato mash is done, place them in a saucepan and fill with water, sprinkle in about 1/2 a teaspoon of salt and bring the water to a boil. Let the potatoes simmer for about 25 minutes until they are soft enough to be pricked quite easily with a fork.
Once the potatoes are cooked, drain out the water and shake the pot so that the potatoes break up slightly and are easier to mash. Place the garlic cloves along with some cream and butter into the pot and top with some pepper and salt to give a great taste to the potatoes. Place the lid back on to let the ingredients mix and leave time for the butter to melt.
Now it’s time to actually mash the potatoes, there are 2 ways this can be done, you can either use an electric whisker to make it more smooth and creamy, or simply use a potato mashed for better texture. I prefer the mashed potatoes as they are just like the ones momma used to cook and seem to taste better, however it’s all up to personal preference.

The best way is to peel the potatoes today, put in fridge covered in water so they dont turn brown. Boil tomorrow early evening and make like normal. Just remember to cool them good before putting in the fridge, use a couple shallow pans if possible, and make sure they are heated up really nice and hot when they are served on Saturday. I also use sour cream and butter when I make mine - I also add a couple dashes of Parmesan Cheese for a little extra flavor. Good Luck!

It's even better with pumpkin or sweet potato mashed with the potato, mixed with an electric beater instead of mashed, and only adding butter, milk and salt.

well u could sue different potatoes...there tons of types...one thing ive tried is boil em like u usuall would peel em then bake em then mash and put all good stuff in.... grazy is a big part of it. if u jsut cooked a turkey or chicken take some of the juices out of the bottom of the pot or whatever and add flour and milk while cooking on a stove...not to much flour jsut enough till ur thickness

I boil mine with chopped onions and garlic.Drain and mash adding (sauted onion and garlic if you didn't put any in the water)a little cream cheese or sour cream, butter, onion and garlic salt, white pepper.Cream or milk if necessary.
A nice change is adding crumbled bacon and sprinkle with cheddar when serving.
Chives or green onions, parmesan cheese are good also.

Your recipe sounds good. I boil mine with garlic cloves, then remove them before mashing. I pour milk or cream on the boiled potatoes and let it start to soak into the potatoes a little before mashing, and then add butter. I don't add salt, I let everyone add their own salt when I serve them. The most important thing about mashed potatoes is to add whatever you're going to add to them before you start mashing.

You might add some buttermilk, maybe garlic powder instead of garlic salt. Also, to make them creamier, buy a potato ricer--this turns the potatoes into what looks like pasta, then you mix them up. You can find a potato ricer at Williams-Sonoma, Bed Bath & Beyond, Linen's N' Things, or other kitchen stores. I like to add cheese to mine--either mozzarella or cheddar (mild).

I put in a huge chunk of velveeta cheese and my oh my is it wonderful!!!!!! You can also put in a hidden valley ranch packet that is used to make dips, or any soup packet that flavors soups like broccoli and cheese is a good one. You could also kick it up a notch and add taco seasoning. Yum Yum.
My boss just mentioned that she puts a package of cream cheese in hers.
