The yobbish behaviour and lack of respect shown by older childre these days, is it the fault of the parents or is it that society itself is too soft on them?

It's the culture of narcissism. Madison Avenue, celebrities- especially pro athletes- and politicians do the most to encourage (either implicitly or explicitly) the selfish values that make young people incapable of feeling any empathy for others. Parents don't exactly encourage these values, but if they don't do anything to curb them when they see them, then the kids are just driving blind and we shouldn't be surprised when they turn out to be shallow, selfish jerks.

Both my friend society is soft on them it is called political correctness see in 1990s there was homes in wales called Bryn Alyn and more were child abuse went on and a lot of top business men, judges, and high profile people were using young boys to for fill their pleasures and to stop it happening again they brought out a new child protection law which was good but it has escerlated out of control they got the facts wrong they took away the parents right to chastise their young teachers stopped from disciplining the young pupils till it got to a stage even policemen can no longer do any thing and with the altitude of young people being treated like animals it has gotten to the stage they are ruling the streets and becoming intolerable with no consequences for their behavior as there are not enough places to house these young people down to spending i work with young people and an asbo is a badge of honor and the treat of being locked up minimal so they just keep going and if they do get locked up life is so easy they run a mock and the availability of drugs is unbelievable so why should they behave if they do they get nothing a good kid these days has ti work hard to be treat normal mis behave and you get every thing treats outings and money for doing what they should do ant way Dave (Mentor)

P.S so don't blame parents fully it is society and the soft approach and rights of young people these days to blame the big boys sitting in parliament making desicistions on young people when they have not got a clue and their kids go to priate schools and dont know how to spell hardship

Its the parents fault. Kids today are being coddled out of guilt they are not shown any manners and not corrected when they do the wrong thing (i.e. being rude and insensitive. Divorce is at an all time high, what does that teach children. Its hard enough to raise a child with two parents, yet there are so many single moms out there. Children need fathers too. Society is breaking down. People don't care about anyone but themselves. What a shame. Selfish people raise selfish children.

Yes and Yes again. Society made a big mistake in abolishing corporal punishment at schools some years ago and parents today were school-children and teenagers when this policy was brought in. Since they were then able to 'get away' with almost anything and discipline collapsed both at home and schools, we are now paying for this very short-sighted policy.

In order to restore the balance, the Government needs to re-introduce corporal punishment, allow Policemen the use of their (open palmed hand too - in my day as a child - Policemen were able to 'clip' one around the ear), and allow parents (and in fact perhaps teach them too) to discipline their own children a lot more. That way, society will be a lot safer and the children should grow up to respect their parents, teachers, and elders a lot better and society itself should then improve.

I would say its totally the parents fault although majority of cases it is for example my friend has a 3 year old and he hit my daughter over the head with a chair and her punishment for him was "(name) thats naughty" didnt change her tone or anything so with parents like that yes parents are to blame. On the other hand society itself is soft my daughters father (my ex) should have been in jail a long time ago and keeps offending because he keeps getting let off which doesnt teach people anything about consequences

There is plenty of blame to go around, but I blame the following things in this order:

1. Screwed up parents who often fail to discipline and instill respect in their children, often because their own lives are messed up with divorce, alcoholism, infidelity, and self-obsession.

2. The news media which makes heroes our of messed up people like Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Lindsay Lohan. I just cringe at the attention these narcissists get while valuable people (inventors, scientists, teachers, physicians, and statesmen) are ignored or given the briefest of coverage.

3. An economy which seems to be concentrating wealth in the hands of fewer and fewer people. The destruction of the middle class in the USA is gradually resulting in a destruction of "middle class values" which include morality, hard work, achievement, and responsibility.

Honestly, I'm grateful that more of our young people are not succumbing to the miserable cultural values that have come about. I hope someday people will wake up and realize what has been done.

Not kids as a whole. Many people say all kids these days are bad , horrible and such. But that's not true, not all of them are. ^ ^ Plus, no matter the generation of kids, older adults are always going to find something to pick holes in. xD But if I had to pick something, it'd be the closed minded-ness (that's not a word xD) and ignorance.

Both but if parents were *allowed* to discipline their children effectively that would help.
Those parents who *wouldn't*/couldn't could then ask the state for help - and for some older children these days that would mean a spell in an approved school in order to teach them manners and so on.

Edit : "mark w" above - exactly! - and it's the same over here too.

The world has changed. The media is flushing their minds with sex, drugs and violence like it's candy. Parents are getting lazy, and rely on video games, TV and the computer to teach their children the ways of the world. Society is becoming numb to outlandish behavior and no one seems to care. It's a shame.
