I am looking for an all around do everything shotgun. I prefer autoloaders and shorter barrels. Shotgun will be used for recreation and occasional 3 gun USPSA match as well as deer, turkey, rabbits, what have ya. I really like the Remington 1100 Tac 4. Normal stock 22 inch vent rib, screw in tubes, and allready comes with magazine extinsions for match use. For $17 I can remove extension and cap at 3 rounds. The only thing that keeps it from being perfect for me is the 2 and 3/4 inch chamber. Is this gonna be a serious handicap for short range woods deer and turkey ?

people killed deer and turkey for years with 2-3/4 shells before they came out with the larger rounds.
If your a good shot there no problem.

While not a super big fan of the 1100, it is a decent shotgun. 2 3/4" shells are not a handicap. I can't count the years I used them for everything from quail to turkey and even slugs for deer and bear. The flaws to the 1100 are the old style seal ring, which has since been upgraded, and the need to be kept very very clean to prevent problems. I'd prefer a beretta it I was going semi auto, more dependable, but more money. a 22" barrel is a good compromise, but for tactical, I use a 20" barrel with extension which gives me 7 in the tube and 1 in the chamber, and in a pinch does douple duty for hunting. Yes the 22" barrel would be better for hunting, but a bit unwieldy for tactical. but go with what your comfortable and accurate with, or get a shotgun with easy to change barrels.
shoot safe

The 2 3/4" is fine as it is just the shell length that is used in guns chambered 2 3/4" Use a high brass shell, it will have a little more powder than low brass. The 1100 is a good gun, but the gun it replaced is GREAT. It is the "Sportsman model 58" , never owned a better shotgun.

Absolutlely not. The 2 3/4" shells will serve you perfectly. I personally use nothing but three inch for everything except skeet, but people that I hunt with use only 2 3/4" and kill just as many deer as I do. The only difference is usually slightly higher velocities and a few more pellets.

I have a Rifled slug barrel on my 1100 using Sabot Slugs dropped a buck at 80 yards this year. Try hastings or Hornadys sabots you will be amazed at the range you get from a shotgun nowadays
