Can you use older versions of ms office on a new computer with vista? Is there any sort of "bandaids" that will make it compatable?

I have Vista, only office 2003 or 2007 will work. If you have an earlier version of office, it will work fine with Ubuntu Linux which requires less RAM. If you decide to take this route you will also have to download wine and crossover. specific instructions can be found anywhere on the web.

There are no bandaids with Vista.

If you are worried about the additional costs, I agree with you. There is a discount microsoft offers for students for office that costs $60.00

MS press release

Offer: For Office 2007 Ultimate version

This will work with Vista.

If you are still uneasy about getting the latest version of office, you should seriously consider trying open office. Runs very much like office did about 10 years ago. http://www.openoffice.org/. The next version will improve the spelling and grammer to equal or better than office word 2007.

Many people are refusing to keep Vista because of its slowness and memory hogging and opting for Ubuntu Linux, XP or 2000 that can each load all the software that is both forward and backwards compatible with Vista.

Vista is not backwards compatible with anything but office 2003

Although Vista is working OK for me, I'm dissatisfied with the speed and memory the operating system takes and takes away from my applications when I push it to the limit. For me, I'm considering returning my computer because of problems with the operating system. If you are an average user, this last paragraph may not concern you.

I hope this helps you.

Question of compatibility raise on same software package of different versions. All new windows support old offices.
Compatibility problems can be solved from Internet by update or download compatibility files.

if you have an older office you should download the compatibility pack from m.soft so ppl with office 2007 can see your attachments.

Sorry, if your vista came with office 2007 you probably will not be able to downgrade, as with i.e 7
