Good question but unfortunately not. The capabilities of the TV are built in the TV tuner. While there are two cables that can be used for HDTVs (Component & HDMI) they will not give you the high definition picture on a regular analog TV set.
PS3's options for analog TVs are the supplied AV cables Sony provides. The only option for you to get the high definition gaming experience would be to buy a high definition TV. At that point if your budget would allow, you would then have a choice of the two cables mentioned before in which HDMI would be your far better choice.
HDMI is superior to component when it comes to PS3 for a few reasons. One it is just one cable that provides both video and audio. Two, Sony requires a component adapter type wire that is not compatible with anything but the PS3.
If you do buy a HDTV the best prices I have found on the HDMI is at : http://www.tigerdirect.com
A good source about the options would be Sony's Playstation web site. They have a quick reference guide.

Does regular cable tv look good on a HDTV? Well it depends on what your are comparing it to. Regular cable will look better on a normal tube tv than a 50" DLP. The smaller the TV the better regular cable will look because it is being projected at 480i. Obviously HD will blow regular cable away, but thats not an option from what you are saying. Also, if your 50" samsung is a widescreen (16:9) then regular cable will look even worse, because it is all broadcast at 4:3. You can watch it at 4:3 on the big tv but you will get big black bars down each side. If you convert the 4:3 to 16:9 you will get a lot of fat people.

That's not possible. The cable is useless unless you have a an HDTV. The cable only works with HDTVS.

No but If the reason is that you are looking to get a better picture than you are used to then you will get the best your TV is capable of with the PS3 if you connect with an s-video cable (you will need to find that cable for the PS3) assuming your TV has an S-Video input.

Sorry no. There is a lot more that goes into an HDTV, then sending a regular TV an HD signal.

No, but if you look hard enough you might find the old "Color Wizard" sheet you put on your old Black and white TV set to "turn it into" a colored TV set.....
And you might find have the Neato X-Ray glasses too...
And a Super Ball.....and Silly Putty...
And who can forget Shake-A-Puddin....or Fuzzy Wuzzy Soap?
IT WAS ALL MAGICAL to us kids in the 60's.......just like your cable is.
