Yes - my own wedding, in 1975! Throwing rice (uncooked, that is!!!) at the couple is an OLD tradition. The rice symbolizes long life. I was picking the stuff out of the pockets of my going-away outfit for WEEKS afterward!

People quit doing it because some idiot wrote a letter to Dear Abby (a popular advice columnist of the day) saying that wild birds eat the rice and explode (makes you wonder about people who believe that crap, no????). Birds eat grain all the time, and rice is no less a grain than oats or wheat or whatever, but people picked up on it and started throwing birdseed, and totally ruined a nice tradition. Oh well.

It's normal, the guests throw rice at the bride and groom, and some gets thrown back. It's a fertility rite that predates Christianity. Many people throw confetti instead though wild bird food is becoming popular, it makes less mess and and is quickly cleared up.

Most people don't throw rice anymore because birds eat the uncooked rice and it expands in their bellies because it absorbs the stomach fluids and actually kills the birds.

Personally I would be pissed if people started throwing rice at me at ANY event.
