Pet insurance for animals is similar to human health insurance. There is a deductible for each claim and there are various policies based on what type of coverage you want. Pre-existing conditions are typically not covered. Age and breed of the animal may effect cost. Sometimes you have to have been enrolled for a certain period of time before you can make claims.
Make sure your vet clinic accepts the pet insurance plan before you sign up for one.
May I ask what your dogs need to be seen for? If it's annual vaccinations, try contacting your shelter for a low cost vaccine clinic. I know in Wisconsin, Petco offers them once or twice a month. If it's something more pressing, most clinics offer something called Care Credit (a line of credit used for vet care)
After looking at several policies, I decided to not get a plan for my cats and dog. There were a lot of things that the plan wouldn't cover and there is still that deductible. You still have to pay your bill at your vet clinic and then try to get a check from the insurance company. I am a client in good standing at my vet clinic and I made an arrangement with my vet that if something major were to come up and I didn't have all the funds at the time to pay for it in full that I could do a payment plan. I have a separate savings account for my critters and an emergency credit card for emergency vet care only

When I lived near a Banfield (commonly found in Petsmarts) I used that..they do various healthcare plans which include certain things, and discounts on the stuff not included.

I don't live by Banfield anymore so now my animals are on VPI. You can get a free quote online from them.

I definitely liked Banfield and it saved me a lot of money over the time I had that dog. Not sure about the value of VPI yet because we haven't been on it too long and all my current pets are younger and in good health.

Well, it's not exactly insurance, but I go through Banfield and they have a program where you pay 20$ or so a month and all of your dog's shots and wellness visits are take care of. Same with spay/neauter. You get a discount on emergencies as well.

Insurance is available for dogs (and other pets), but it is almost as expensive as vet care. Call your local Humane Society -- they might be able to refer you to someone who will provide care at a discount.

The bottom line is that you should not own pets for which you cannot afford proper care!
