why is the back of a person considered unsterile IF the whole body is covered by the SAME sterile gown?

Because you cannot see your back or if something unsterile touches up against your back. Whatever is out of your field of vision is considered to be unsterile because you cannot watch everything behind you to ensure it stays sterile.

Considering the backs are not sterile allow someone who is unsterile to assist the people in sterile gowns ie, grab a pager. Also when putting the gown on it is hard to control the back flap and be guaranteed that it does not touch the scrubs.

i have no idea maybe its the same reason that anything from the waist down is considered unsterile.
