my husband is deployed in iraq...i have power of attorney, so am i liable to file our taxes? or do i wait until he comes home in may--would we still have 180 days after leaving a combat zone to file?

If you file jointly, you have the full 180 days from the day he returns to file. If you do not file jointly, the 180-day extension only applies to him.

Since you have the POA, you can file before then.

With the power of attorney, you can file a joint return without his signature. If you have a refund coming, you might as well go ahead and get it.

If you owe, you might as well take advantage of the 180 days before filing.

It would be kind of tedious, but you could send him a copy of the return to sign and send back to you. Don't forget to take advantage of the benefits of being in the combat zone.
