Things around the home in general..it seems like everything is always strung out here and there...

Also with kids toys...my gosh - they just got presents the last two days and they're already missing pieces..no matter how many times I tell them not to lose anything...but that's a whole other question..

I want to be a neat freak, but I don't have the compulsion...HELP!

GAH!!! The kid's toys are a nightmare!!!! I am forever stepping all over them. There is an article about organizing kid's rooms here: http://www.uncommonrooms.com/?p=8

and organizing kid's bathrooms here: http://www.uncommonrooms.com/?p=11

They're adding more organization articles over the next week or so.

I really think it just comes down to making yourself get it done the first time, then keeping on top of it...... Fly Lady is good...... I've used her site some.... I'm like you though..... I really want a nice house, but I have 2 kids and a full time job. Trying to keep up with everything can be a nightmare at times.

Good luck!

you would just have to constantly be picking things up.

I think the main thing, is to make sure there IS a place for everything, because when there isnt, that's when you pick it up and place it on a counter top or table.. and then the clutter comes. So just start organizing and make sure EVERYTHING has its own place. Box up things/toys that arent being used (or the ones that annoy you :) )
that way when you do pick up the house you put things where they go, and not just transfering the mess. Another thing that I find that helps me, is to clean up everything before bed.. its just so dreadful to wake up to a messy house. Although i'm so tired tonight, im just leaving it messy! i hope some of this helps. you arent alone! I dont know how other people have immaculate homes, no matter when you go over there, its just perfect as can be, ugh! I HAVE to know when company is coming, so i can power clean :P
good luck!

Speaking from experience.... with small children, you just cannot stay organized. The best coping mechanism is to adjust your expectations. If you can get all the toys picked up and into a box, bin or cupboard at the end of the day, you are doing good. Pieces WILL get lost. Stuff WILL get broken.

If you want to teach your children neatness, (and you have the patience of a saint) you can supervise the children putting their toys away - you can even teach them to sort. One day sort by color ( red in this box, blue on the shelf...), next time sort by type (animals, vehicles, building blocks, etc.).

The best way is to get rid of excess stuff. For the kids, have a toy room or area and keep reminding them to keep their toys there. Store things as close to the place they are used as possible. Things that you use a lot should be in easy to reach places. Use the hard-to-reach places for things you don't use that often. Get used to putting things away as soon as you are done with them and keep on top of the kids to put their stuff away.
Keeping organized can only be done by working long hours everyday. If you aren't prepared to do all this then learn to cope with less than perfect.

I am a neat freak I hate for stuff to be out of place and messy. When I do let my home get messy I get depressed. I am constantly picking up after my daughter and staying on her to put her toys back in the "right" places. I clean out her toys before christmas and before her birthday (so we have a place to put the new ones). I had to whip myself into being a neat freak, I did it by going through everything finding a place for it (I hate clutter or clutter look) and making sure it stays in that place. If you use it put it back simple as that.

No, you don't want to be a neat freak - you'll be forever unhappy and dissatisfied.

What you want is a home that is warm, welcoming and clean - for YOU as well as for your family. Totally achievable with the Flylady system.

Go see the Flylady www.flylady.net. The site is free and she'll help you get it together.

Take it one step at a time. Put something away each day.
