If you use a gift card and you want to leave a tip, can you take the tip out of the gift card balance? How does that work? For example, for Olive Garden gift cards.

No, a gift card balance is money that goes directly to the restraunt. A tip however, goes to the waitress.

NO! I am a server, gift cards cannot be used as tips and if you don't leave anything else but a gift card your server will get NO tips! When using most digital dining computer systems in a resturaunt, you run a gift card or credit card (for verification) into the computer for the total amount of dinner, not the total amount and the tip you want to give. There is no way to enter a tip amount onto a computer before it is given. If it is cash, you simply enter cash, if it is a credit card it must be verified before being handed back to the customer for them to decide what the tip will be (which will then be entered into the computer secondarily). Gift cards do not work that way. I don't know why, but they just don't and I hope you wouldn't do this to your server.

I used to work at Pizza Hut a number of years ago, and I can tell you with complete confidence that the card can only be used for purchases (unless they have changed their policy in recent years). So I would suggest that the tip should be separate.

No, that can't be done. Make sure you have enough cash on you to be able to tip the server appropriately. 15-20% of the cost of your entire meal is generally acceptable.

You can't do that - that would be like giving the restaurant's money to the waiter/waitress
