As a child, growing up in Ohio, I too remember going shopping with my mom & dad, a family affair of sorts. There are a few A&P stores still open here & there. I also remember shopping in the Five & Dime stores with my mom. My favorite dime store was FW Woolworth's. I loved to look at all the candy that was enclosed in the glass enclosed cases also.

My favorite place had nothing to do with shops. actually much to my parents dismay it was in the kennel with my smelly old bulldog. He would NEVER let anyone else there., but from the time I was around two years old my parents would sometimes find me there having a nap. He was so nice my bulldog. He always understood and gave me a big lick when I got a (frequent) hiding from my folks.
He has been waiting at the rainbow bridge for me for over 50 years now. I know I will see him again there and I will be as young as he has become too..

I don't remember any of those here. Woolworth's was great and the old Rexall Drug. The grocery store that was around the corner is still there and owned by the same family. I never liked that store because of the dim lighting and it seemed not very clean. I also stole a roll of lifesavers there .. and my mom caught me. I never did that again!

Several years ago, I worked at an A & P in the produce department. We had one of the nicest managers I ever worked for. There are still A & P's around in some areas.
The store I remember most was the 'company store'. My stepdad was a coal miner and we'd go there and shop, then they'd take the money from his paycheck. I loved going to that store.---Luvs

I don't think they are still in business, at least not in my area. It is also the store I remember the most! One of my best memories of A&P was my mom grinding her own coffee. We lived in Chicago then and walked to the store and pulled a cart behind us to carry the groceries home in. I remember having a lot of A&P brands around our kitchen. A memory that was not soley of A&P but of that time in my life was coming home from the store and my job was to take the celophane package of margarine and break the small red dot of food coloring by pushing that spot on the bag. Then I had to kneed the coloring so that it spread throughout the pale margarine. Then it looked like butter!

We shopped at an A&P on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn when I was a child. I just checked the map on the web site provided by "Iraid". Apparently they no longer have any stores in the five boroughs of New York City anymore.

I remember an A&P store in my town also. But, my favorite spot to shop was the GC Murphy's dimestore. On Friday, we were always allowed to pick out candy. They had individual glass containers of candy, and the sale clerk weighed it up right in front of you.Plus, I bought my first bottle of Evening in Paris cologne there. I can still remember the layout of the store.

I remember the A&P; but my mom used to shop at Krogers in Ohio-and then Goodings here in Central Florida.
My favorites were a small store at the bottom of the hill we lived on in Ohio; my dad used to get me red licorice and chocolate Cokes. The other store I loved was a convenience store here in Florida, Handy Way, that I used my bike to get to every chance I could....I loved the Icees (Slurpees), and the freedom to go there by myself....:)

F. W. Woolworth's. While my Mom was shopping and gossiping with all of her friends who worked there, I would be at the grill having a grilled chees with dill pickle sandwich and a Vanilla Coke. Cost about 35 cents for the whole meal and the drink too.
