I have an expensive piano keyboard at home. How can I find out what is best key to sing in for my voice?

I can only think of begining with say note D, then E, then F and maybe G and A singing same song. And the area with the least amount of strain of reaching high note in song and low notes would be my key. Any ideas?

This confuses a lot of people. You may sing in many different keys. The range of notes in a particular song and where most of the notes in the song lie within that range of notes are what you need to look at .

Have I only confused matters more? I'll try to explain.

A song written in the key of C Major may include notes from G below Middle C, to the G just above Middle C. But another song in C Major may include the notes from Middle C to the C an octave higher. If you are comfortable singing from G to G, the first song might be for you. If you are comfortable singing from Middle C to C an octave higher, you might prefer the second song.

But, say that you prefer the C to C song, except that there are too many high Bs and Cs in the song, making you strain a bit. You might want to transpose the song down a step or two to make it just right for you.

What you need to do is find out what your vocal range is, and what your comfortable tessitura is. Tessitura is the area of the song and your voice that feels the easiest to you.

So, both the range of your voice (and your voice type) and the range of the song work together to help you determine if the key of the song is good for you.

Enjoy your piano and your singing!
