what is the date on the visa? Assuming it is a permenent resident visa, you MUST land (arrive) in Canada BEFORE the date on that visa. If you did not do that, then the visa is void, and you will not be allowed in.
if your passport has less than 6 months, and the visa office have asked for the passport, then they will not give you the visa until you renew the passport because you MUST have 6 months or more.

You should check to see if Canada is on the Six Month Law (Passports must be valid for at least SIX months after the end of the trip)
Not all countries are, thus the confusion

You should be as long as you will be returning before it expires. I don't know if you are american. we don't usually need visas for Canada. You should probably apply for a new passport soon because it seems to be taking almost that long to get a new one.
