I have always wondered why do people refer to Jesus as God?

I think this is blasphemy..

If u r gonna support your answers using quotes please states where in the Bible(if possible)..

If u r gonna say Jesus said "I and the father are one," that doesn't mean they are the same person; that simply means(to me) their goals are similar; they have similar purposes; they are close.

If u r gonna refer to the Trinity as the same person, state why with Biblical support// No personal beliefs please..

MadforMac if I knew them I would have searched for them.. Obviously I wanted to get other ppls perspective...

I just want to thank all who helped me.. Majority of them were good answers...
Thank you NickyofTy, Seek the truth... Steve Amato for the links...

To J h: if I said you and I are one, what does that mean to you?
It didnt have to clearly state it for it to mean just that... Things can have more than one meaning;ambiguity.

To: Jiahua44: I tried to make my question as clear as possible. I am sorry you found it so vague.

I researched the Bible verses you sent me, and all I found were CONTRADICTIONS.

I had to give Tebone03 the best answer because she covered all points on my question.
I did not be biased and give Gabriella, Tczubern or Wulf it just because we share the same view.

Thanks again everybody. By the way, I am not in any denomination at the particular time; trying to find one that suits me..
I would classify myself an Agnostic to some extent..

Jesus tells us in John 14:9 "he that hath seen me hath seen the Father". The Father is Jesus. Jesus tells us:
"I am come in my Father's name" (John 5:43)
"I and my Father are one." (John 10:30)

Jesus is "God", the "Father", and the "Son":
"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6)
The Father (God) is called "Lord" in the old testament. (Psalms 110:1),(Isaiah 45:6)
The Father (God) is called "Lord" in the new testament . (Mark 12:36-37)
Jesus (God) is called "Lord" in the old testament. (Psalms 110:1),(Mark 12:36-37)
Jesus (God) is called "Lord" in the new testament. (1 Corinthians 15:47), (Jude 4)
Jesus (God) is called "God" in the old testament. (Isaiah 9:6)
Jesus (God) is called "God" in the new testament. (Matthew 1:23), (John 20:28), (Hebrews 1:8), (Titus 2:13), (1 Timothy 3:16), (Acts 20:28), (Acts 22:8-14)
The Father (God) is called the "Saviour" in the old testament (Isaiah 45:21), (Isaiah 43:11)
The Father (God) is called the "Saviour" in the new testament (Luke 1:47)
Jesus (God) is called the "Saviour" in the new testament (Titus 2:13), (Luke 2:11)
The Father (God) is called "God" in the old testament. (Hosea 13:4)
The Father (God) is called "God" in the new testament. (I Corinthians 8:6)
Jesus (God) is called "Father" in the old testament. (Isaiah 9:6)
If Jesus and the Father are not the same person, but there is just one Lord, and there is just one God, then how can Jesus and the Father both be God, and both be Lord. (Two persons would make two Lords, and two Gods)
There is one Spirit (Ephesians 4:6 [Read Below]). There is one Lord. (Ephesians 4:5 [Read Below]). There is one God. (Ephesians 4:6 [Read Below]).

"There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." (Ephesians 4:4-6)
Jesus is God, Jesus is Lord, and Jesus is the Spirit. Jesus is the Holy Ghost. Jesus is the Comforter:
"And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever" (John 14:16)
"I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you." (John 14:18)
"But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." (Romans 8:9)

Jesus will manifest himself as the Holy Ghost:
"He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him." John 14:21
The name of the Holy Ghost is Jesus:
"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." (John 14:26)
The Father and Jesus will reside in the believer as the Holy Ghost (one God ; one Spirit). This is not three people residing:
"Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him." (John 14:23)
Jesus lets us know in John 14:23 that the Holy Ghost, the Father & Jesus will abide with the believer. Remember in Ephesians 4:6, there is just one Spirit. There is one God. Jesus is the name of God. Jesus is the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
The bible tells us Jesus is above all:

"For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:" (Colossians 2:9-10)
"And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth." (Matthew 28:18)

And the bible tells us that the God, the Father is above all:
"There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." (Ephesians 4:4-6)
Jesus and the Father can not both be above all, unless they are the same person / spirit. Ephesians 4:6 states that the Father is through all, and in you all. The Father is the Holy Ghost.
The bible tells us the Father, The Word, and the Holy Ghost prove Jesus is the Son of God. And there is one God. (And Ephesians 4:5 tells us there is one Lord)

"For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." (I John 5:7)
All things were made by Jesus:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." (John 1:1-3)
"For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:" (Colossians 1:16)

If Jesus was not God, how could he make all things.
"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." (Genesis 1:1)
Jesus is God. God created heaven and earth. Jesus created heaven and earth. "Two persons" did not create the earth. It was done alone, by the one living God:
"Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself" (Isaiah 44:24)
Jesus is the first and the last:
"And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death." (Revelation 1:17-18)

First of all in the beginning - the first words of genesis are using a Singular verb with a plural pronoun in the Biblical hebrew which indicates more than one 'God' in one person (The Trinity)

Mark 14:61 the High Priest asked Christ if He was the Anointed one, the Son of the Blessed. (NASB)
See Mark 14:62 If Christ had replied Just that He was A son of god the high Priest would not been able to claim Blasphemy.! Logically, if the High Priest claims blasphemy why would you assume otherwise. The High Priest considered Jesus was claiming to be God.

Also when Jesus told the Pharisees that Abraham rejoiced to see His day - the Pharisees took up stones to stone him- they certainly understood that He was saying He and God are one!!

there is not any such element as an everlasting Son. the two words are on an analogous time unique. you may't be a son devoid of being begotten, and "without end begotten" isn't interior the Bible and is an impossibility. notwithstanding, Jesus did exist interior the beginning up because it says in John one million:one million-14. Luke financial ruin one tells why Jesus is named the Son of God. additionally examine John 14:9-10 and Colossians 2:9-10. with regard to the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit, God IS the single and only all-powerful, everlasting Spirit. there is not any holy Spirit break free God, who's the daddy. Spirit is his substance; that's what he's; "Father" is his place in terms of his advent.

While I am not a Christian, I agree that the non-Trinitarian view of God seems more sensible. You might want to look at the non-Trinitarian versions of Christianity.

I would suggest looking into these Christian churches which are all non-Trinitarian: Jehovah's Witnesses, Christadelphians, Bible Students, American Unitarian Conference, Arian Catholic Church, Oneness Pentecostal, UU Christian Fellowship, etc. Swedenborgianism (look up Swedenborg on Wikipedia) was also non-Trinitarian. Perhaps one of these may speak to your condition. You can find all of them doing an online search.

While it is true that LDS Mormons do not believe in the Trinity, they have a doctrine of Godhead and eternal progression which is more polytheistic than monotheistic.

Hi Terry, you have some excellent Holy Bible texts here - hope they are of value to you..

Immanuel means God with us - to be found in Matthew ch1v23: The virgin shall give birth to a son - and His name shall be IMMANUEL, which translated means *GOD WITH US*
also:
Isaiah ch9v6: For unto us a son is born, a child is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, *MIGHTY GOD*, Everlasting Father, Prince of peace..

1John ch5 verse 7-8 --verse7 says "So there are *THREE* witnesses in heaven, The Father, The Word (is Jesus) - and The Holy Spirit, and these THREE are one..

Hope this helps
Blessings x

EDIT: Menome makes a good point..

and can i just add - JW's disagree - they have their own bible which does not contain the truth, b/c they are not Christians..'moises' and 'papa'

actually, i was going to ask the same question 'greasymo' asked: are you a JWitness?
just a sense you might be!!

John 1, verse 1, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

John 1, verse 14, "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. "

Thomas felt the nail holes and exclaimed, "My Lord! And, my God!" Thomas called Jesus his God, and Jesus did not rebuke Him for it, correcting him or anything. If Jesus is not God, why would He allow Thomas to call him God?

Isaiah 9, verse 6, "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Why would the prophet include Mighty God, as one of His names? Was the prophet giving us a word straight from the Lord, or not?

By the way, you're adding words to the bible by saying "I and the Father are one" means anything other than what it says. If Jesus meant "one in purpose" why did He just say "one"? You're adding the words to make yourself appear correct. Just leave it as is, and you could be WRONG.

Gal. 3:20-" God is one". If you read Isaiah 9:6 very carefully its very clear. Jesus is referred to as the mighty God and the everlasting Father. Those are just a few examples. Scripture clearly defines in Colossians 2:9 Jesus was the Father,Son, and Holy Ghost. It says all of the fullness of the Godhead dwelt in Jesus bodily.

The Holy Spirit is God:
1. He strives (Genesis 6:3)
2. He teaches (Luke 12:12).
3. He convicts (John 1:8).
4. He directs (Acts 13:2).
5. He makes intercession (Romans 8:26).
6. He inspires (II Peter 1:21).
7. He sanctifies (I Peter 1:2).
8. He is God (Acts 5:3-4).
9. He is truth (John 16:13).

One hope: This is that which is called that blessed hope. It is also called the catching away or rapture of the church (I Cor 15:51-53; I Thes 4:13-17). This is when we shall all not die but we will all be changed. This earthly body must be given a heavenly body. (I Cor 15:40-44). One Lord: There can be but one Lord for the Body of Christ and He is the Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us and rose again. This same Lord is also God:

The Lord Jesus Christ is God:

1. He has all power (Matthew 28:18).
2. He is all knowing (Col 2:3).
3. He was in the beginning (John 1:1).
4. He is God (John 8:58).
5. He gives redemption (Col 1:14).
6. He is present everywhere (Matthew 28:20).
7. He became a Man (John 1:14)
8. He created all things (Eph 3:9; Col 1:6).

One faith: This is not our faith but the faith of Jesus Christ (Romans 3:22; Gal 3:16). One baptism: This is the baptism of the Spirit that places us into the Body of Christ (I Cor 12:13). This is not the water baptism that was done in other ages.
One God and Father of all:
1. He makes covenants (Genesis 9: 1-17; Gen 12:1-3)
2. He is one God (I Chronicles 8:6).
3. He is a redeemer (Isa 63:16).
4. He is the master (Mal 1:6).
5. He is the I AM (Ex 3:14).
6. He is JEHOVAH (Ex 6:3).
7. He is by whom the whole family in haven and earth is named (Eph
3:14-15).
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are all God and all three are one.
1. The Spirit raised hi
2. m (Romans 8:11).
3. The Father raised him (Romans 6:4).
He raised himself (John 10:1). 8; John 2:19-20

Here are a few that come to mind -

"The Father and I are one" (John 10:31)

"Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father" (John 14:9)

He [Jesus Christ] is the image of the invisible God. (Colossians 1:15)

In Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form. (Colossians 2:9)

The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being. (Hebrews 1:3)

Your interpretation and human reasoning are wrong to reject John 10:31...

Where does one begin when the entire Bible is full of references to the tri-une nature of God?

I'll just give a few of the myriad examples.

Starting right off in Genesis 1, the English states "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth". In Hebrew, it states "B'raishish bara Elohim es ha'sh'mayim v'es ho'o'retz". Note that the Bible uses the word "Elohim" which is translated to "God", but "Elohim" is a pleural word. "Eloheinu" is the singular form of the word, and it is "Elohim" that is used throughout the Hebrew Scriptures.

GOD created the heavens and the earth, and the SPIRIT of God hovered over the face of the deep, and the WORD spoke and said "Let there be light." And Elohim (not "Eloheinu") said "Let US make man in OUR image, after OUR likeness"

Let me jump right to the New Testament, or I'll NEVER finish giving Old Testament Scriptures!

John 1:1 says "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." ... (14) "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us ..."

Jesus said "When you've seen me, you've seen the Father."
Jesus said "You believe in God, believe also in me."
Jesus said "I am Life"
Jesus said "I am the Bread of Life"
Jesus said "I am the Water of Life"
Jesus said "I am the Resurrection and the Life. If anyone believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live again."

One of the followers of Jesus said to Jesus, "You are the anointed son of God" to which Jesus replied, "You are right. My Father in heaven has revealed this to you."

When Jesus was teaching a crowd, after he finished, they began to pick up stones to kill him. Jesus asked "What did I do worthy of death?" They answered, "Not anything you did, but what you said. You made yourself equal to God"

At Jesus' trial, the high priest asked him "Are you the son of God?" Jesus said "Yes", to which the high priest tore his robe and cried out "BLASPHEMY!"

Do I need to continue? The disciples knew he was claiming equality with God, the crowds knew he was claiming equality with God, and the high priest knew he was claiming equality with God.

In his famous book Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis makes this statement, "A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on the level with a man who says he is a poached egg - or he would be the devil of hell. You must take your choice. Either this was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us."
