This is the time when they do make strange...and for the strangest reasons. Keep putting him in your MILs arms. Just stick with it, even though it's annoying, frustrating and embarrassing. It IS a phase. If she has a funny voice, or is short, like you said, he'll get used to it and figure out that she's not scary with more exposure to her. Get some ear plugs and good luck!

Are you comfortable with your mother in law? If you have a strained relationship, or are not comfortable around her your son may sense that. I would let him see you hug her and talk to her using eye contact, etc that way he sees that she's not a threat or someone to be feared. He's just a baby, he will have to spend time with her and get to know her.

Does he cry when she talks to him without picking him up? If it's only when she picks him up, it could be that she doesn't feel secure in holding him and he senses that.

There's really nothing you can do but to have your mother-in law spend more time with him - preferably alone, unless you don't trust her alone with him - so he can get used to her.

Maybe he takes a while to warm up. Tell her not to pick him up, just ignore him and talk to you so he gets used to her being around. Then maybe she can offer him a toy or whatnot. Maybe she's coming on too strong, my dad did that with my kids and they disliked him until they were about age 2.

your son might be getting to the age where he is suspiscious of certain people...

you can't apologize for his taste in people, he is just going to have to get used to your mother in law.

waiting has to be an option, because you've no other choice. you can't force a baby to feel comfortable when he does not.

Maybe she somehow scratches him, or her voice scares him.

Have you tried allowing her to try it alone without any of you in the room? Maybe the child feels YOU tenseing up or giving off a negative vibe.

Try giving granny time alone go sit in another room or something

Well I have saw that happen before. I think your mother in law shall be with him more and he will get used to her. That helped in my situation and hope it helps in yours.

make him understand that she is his granny. It is an unfortunate situation where he will end up getting used to it. Unfortunately there's not much you can do. Make her give him things that he likes and make her share games with him as well. More exposure for sure.
