Dogs are the most wonderful creatures in the world! I work at a doggy-day care, so I see around 200 dogs on a regular basis, some of these daily. On those days when I am out of sorts, they know it, and respond accordingly. The 'packs'' best consolers are suddenly everywhere that I am, where any ole normal day they are off doing their own thing. The boisterous dogs stay calmer. The players bring me toys to cheer me up.They stay close until I give them a hug or sit down and spend some quiet time with them. Then they dissapate, satisfied that they have done a good job.

They are also kind to one another, giving each other nudges, or tail wags or bringing a toy to a dog that looks in need of some TLC.

The answer to your question is YES! All dogs have an empathic nature and will respond to sadness with caring and compassion.

They truly do know your moods and sense your sadness anxiety, etc. I was diagnosed with a serious chronic illness last year and my daughter's golden retriever was my saving grace. That dog would put his paw in my lap...lay his head on my knee and just show me how much he loved me and wanted to make me feel better. Once when I had to do a bowel cleansing for a test I was so distressed that he lay down on the floor with me .. moved up against me as close as he could get and put a leg across my waist. I will never,as long as I live, forget that special dog and how much he helped me through a terrible time.

When I feel sad, my dog just comes over and looks at me with his big eyes and when they do that it looks like thy are trying to say, "Hey whats wrong." Yes I think a dog can tell when you are sad.

My dog saved my life! I broke up with my boyfriend and cried for one month straight, I had no reason to live anymore, I rescued a pit lab mix, and every day I cried on my bed, she licked my face and made me feel special again. I got out of bed because she needed to be walked. Whenever I cried she would lick my face and cuddle with me. I owe her my life!!
They really can feel your emotions and can make your life important again.

Dogs pick up on our emotional energy...so I think they sense when we are feeling down. My pets even lick my tears if I a crying, but then again they might just like the taste of salt. :)

Anytime my GSD would see me crying she would come and lick the tears off of my face and anytime she just knew that I was upset she would come up to me and start licking me. Now I have a JRT and if she knows that I am upset she will come and jump in front of me to get my attention if I am standing but if I am sitting she will come and jump on my chest and lick my face until I can't breath so i can't be upset anymore.

If the dog loves you and is bonded to you, I am quite sure he feels your sadness and wants to help you feel better, mine always do that.

I think that dogs can tell when we are feeling down, and I do think that they try to make us feel better.

Yes I think they can sense how we feel too. My little guy hardly ever gets on my lap but if I'm having one of those down days he's on my lap constantly.
