hey guys, most of you were right, 1 of the main cables snapped that connected the handbrake to the back wheels. The mechanic said there is 5 cables and 2 were wore away, so he fixed the 2 of them and replaced the broken one. He also said the brake fluid was all over one of the main brake shoes and it was all rotten away. So he had to give me a new shoe and bleed the brakes. It came to around £200 :(

YUP!
I heard that noise before.
There are cables connected the handbrake control and sometimes they get rusty and snap.
It can be a nasty, difficult job so I suggest you get a few estimates from independent shops.

My parents had a corsa and this happened on the drive (as on a angle) it was on the handbrake cable but was a connecter underneath the car.
It only cost around £20.00 for this to be replaced but this was a local garage. Most garages will check it out for you for free and give you an estimate but make sure you dont get ripped off.
Good luck

Here is a tip for you miladdo.
The Highway Code (UK) says you can not rely on the handbrake to keep a car stationary.
It doesn't say what other measures you can use... that is up to you. I personally leave my car in gear as well to prevent it rolling.... but Highway Code just means if you rely on the handbrake alone... and your car rolls away.... YOU are liable for any damage. And I've seen cars roll away many a time.
Choc it, chain it up... Highway Code don't give you all the ways to keep it still, but best you remember this.
If it's snapped it shouldn't be too difficult for a garage to repair. I think mine is a cable going to back brake.

I think you're right. Something's snapped. Could be a cable, could be a connector. From what you describe it isn't the ratchet, or the brake would still work, just not stay on.
Happened to me once, years ago. I always leave it in first or reverse and also turn the steering so the wheels chock against the curb on a hill, on a belt & braces principle.

Alex I think it may be a cable,or a connector that connects cable to cable, or cable to actuator. It could also be off the fulcrum in the brake drum.
Luke if You don't know what a corsica is you do not need to answer any more questions.Your answers won't amount to much.

could be 1 of 3 things
1. cable broken
2. hand brake ratchet broken ( this is under hand brake lever)
3. self adjusters inside drum broken
good luck

Remove the cover from the e-brake & inspect. If everything appear OK, then raise the vehicle & support n jack stands to investigate further.
