I'm writing a paper on evolution for my english class, and according to my research, creationists believe the world was created about 10,000 years ago, while evolutionists believe it's been around for millions of years. My question is (for any Bible-buffs out there), does it actually say in the Bible that God created Earth 10,000 years ago? I've only read that it says God created Earth 'in the beginning'. If it actually states a specific amount of years, I would really love to know, because a vital part of my argument rests on this point. Thanks a lot

I think your research might be a little lacking:

a) Creationists (the young earth type) generally believe the world is about 6000 years old,

b) Scientists ("evolutionists" is not a real word) believe it's billions of years old, not millions.

I think the Creationist calculate the age they have using genealogies and stuff like that. Apparently going all the way back to Adam, using all the dates and ages and such, gets you to about 6000 years.

The Bibles does not state that and neither do creationist. Creationist believe the earth is about 6200 years old based on the genealogies in Genesis 5 and 11 and secular history.
The Bible gives the time from creation to Abraham to within 1 year which will be around 2050 years after creation. History places Abraham about 2100 B.C. Today is 2007. Add it up-2007+2100+2050=6157. Actually the agreed age is 6230. See- http://www.bibleworldhistory.com/ for some good charts with background and critical path information.

God created Adam somewhere about 6,000 years ago.

We don't know how long between the time God created Adam and the time he sinned.

He don't know how long between the time God first created the heavens and the earth in Genesis 1:1 and the time He began to recreate the earth starting in Genesis 1:3.

I DO know THIS much - each day in Genesis 1 was a period of darkness following by a period of light: "There was an evening, and there was a morning, and that was the first day"

If 1 day represented say, 100,000 years, for example, then each day would consist of 50,000 years of dark followed by 50,000 years of sunshine on any one spot on the earth. Imagine how slow the earth would be moving to be able to rotate on it's axis once in every 100,000 years! It would come to a complete stop, and would NEVER be able to speed up to the point where one rotation lasted a mere 24 hours, after having moved so slowly that it took 100,000 years, previously!

Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Did it say when? No, this earth is millions of years old. Some try to cram that this earth is only 6000 years old. Which is a lie.

Bishop James Ussher calculated the Earth using the ages of the people listed in the Bible. Young Earth Creationists bought it, but it's nonsense.

The Bible does not give a specific date or years, but it does give us the genealogies of people from Adam forward. Archbishop Ussher did the research and came up with that dating. I have including a link if you wish to learn more about him and how he came up with his dating:

No, creationists have different views. I am a Christian and know it was created millions of years ago, the Bible mentions dinosaurs.

Scripture says God SPOKE all things into existence with His Word:
" By the Word of the Lord were the heavens created, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.... For HE SPAKE AND IT WAS DONE; HE COMMANDED AND IT STOOD FAST". (psalm 33:6-9)

It doesn't state WHEN. People just sit down and try to count backwards. That gives us a good ballpark figure.
