Both above answers are OK. I would add that Vicodin is hydrocodone and acetaminophen (Tylenol). Many people forget that there is Tylenol in Vicodin and Lorcet and other narcotic meds commonly prescribed by dentists after extractions. Do not take extra doses of these since Tylenol toxicity to the liver can be quite serious.
Hydrocodone is more potent than codeine - - 5 mg of hydrocodone is similar if efficacy to 30 mg of codeine.
Hydrocodone causes much less nausea than codeine and is better tolerated by most patients in my experience as a cancer doctor.

Hydrocodone is the generic form of Vicodin. Hydrocodone and Codeine are 2 different drugs. Hydrocodone is equivalent to morphine in pain relief.

They are not the same drug but they are related. If you are allergic to codeine you may also be allergic to hydrocodone. Hydrocodone relieves pain better for most people.
