I have an undergraduate degree in speech. I want to later get an AUD (doctorate of audiology) (does not require a master's degree) I want to join the military before going to grad school in order to gain experience, pay a few bills etc...... Does this plan make sense? How can I use my degree in the Military?

I would want you to talk to all branches of ROTC or Direct Commissioning sources to answer your questions.

(1) You are probably eligible for a DIRECT COMMISSION into military medicine branch that has direct commissioning opportunities for your specialty

(2) Your skills are needed and your plan makes sense IF you meet the other requirements per service.

Now, I am not in a military medicine specialty. However, if I were you, I'd start with the Navy first - they seem to have specialties for everything. Second, Air Force.

Finally, you could contact a military hospital nearest you and ask to speak with their SLAP and ask them for your best move. I think that most services along the line of SLAP are "farmed" out to staffing agencies and are not given as a military specialty, but I could be wrong.

One more thing...please know the mission of the particular branch that you may serve. "Experience", "paying a few bills", "etc" are all benefits of having successful service, not as a reason to join. The objective of all branches are to win our nations wars, and at times, an AUD may have to pick up a weapon and defend ground. Just don't want you to wake up in a fox hole one night and state that you were only there for the benefits.

only after the degree then you become an officer in the military.

the degree will not get you anything but the paygrade of E3 if you decide to enlist. If you want to be an Officer, it will most likely NOT be enough to get you offered a commission...but that Doctorate would be.. in the medical field helping TBI(traumatic Brain Injury) patients regain their speech skills.
