can anyone tell me the origin of this stupid saying? it is so obviously not true!

Sorry I don't know the origin, but I agree with you. My variation on that is - What doesn't kill you can leave you permanently crippled.

I think that that saying is kind of cool. You just can't take it too literally. But if you really want to look into it, then try this example: you were on fear factor the show. you had to do all of the scary tasks. None of the killed you. they only gave you the sense of accomplishment and courage, that you can do anything.

it doesnt really mean that it means more like though the hard times you get stronger because youve already had to cope with something bad and know how to handle.
