The words Adam and Eve weren't intended as names. There may well have been just two individuals, with or without names, who started what we know as the human race. Or "Adam & Eve" may have been an entire species. They were, perhaps, soul-less at birth, as are all animals on earth. God chose a time to give them...and all their descendants...immortal souls, with qualities unlike the other animals. Please think of Genesis as allegory, as it was intended by the writers. Yes, they had navels, but they were quite unlike their dads and moms.
