Religion and people will start using the word exclusively in this context???
What happened to belief in humanity or belief in elves or what ever you wish. It means fictitious, not proven.
I don't believe that it gives us the right to try to rob any ones belief of and in God or Gods, Reincarnation or Santa Clause, Why is there so much disrespect and hatred towards a non proven, opinion oriented thing, belief?

No thumbs down please, everyone has a right to verbalize themselves.

Many issues of belief have nothing to do with deities, such as axioms and logic, but certainly the ones that inspire the most arguments and fighting (unfortunately) seem to be associated with belief or lack thereof in deities.

If you think through the religious beliefs of many people, it is clear why they are so vehement and insistent. Many believe that if you do not believe as they do, you are damning yourself to an eternity in hell. Even though you may not like it, they are concerned for your immortal soul and are trying to help you. They feel that they not only have the right, the have an obligation to rob you of your own beliefs, if those beliefs will lead to your damnation, according to their beliefs.

As a Catholic, I want to help you understand what I believe, and if possible help start you on a path to a similar faith; in fact, I'm required by the tenets of my faith to try to do so. I just hope I'm enlightened enough to realize that disrespect and hatred are ugly and will convince you that I obviously have no idea what the real truth is. I don't want to rob you of your beliefs; rob is a word that implies violence. I want to provide the opportunity to help you understand what I believe, and if you find it appealing then help you move forward on a journey into my particular faith.

I teach 6th grade Sunday school, and we teach units on solidarity, and emphasize that every human being deserves to be treated with respect and dignity, not just those we agree with.

Because religion issues are debated over the years and became a hot issue. That's why when people say about believe they will think about religions.
I don't have to believe in reincarnation and ghosts. I know they are true. Although there are a lot of fakes, they are proven. I encounter them twice too. Freaky, but exciting. Don't try it. There could be side effects on your soul/spirit.
I don't think people are disrespecting unproven thoughts. People only believe in what they see so they will not believe what is not proven.

Belief indicates that you either think something is going to happen the same way tomorrow that it did today, that is wishful thinking. Believing in something takes faith. Even believing that your boss is going to pay you at the end of the week is an act of faith. So you are either wishing or believing. Not exactly the same thing. True believing is equal to receiving.

You are right when you say belief means unproven, but wrong when you say it means "fictitious". There are many things in the world that were once unproven but were found to be true. You may not know for sure in this life, but someday you will know. Don'y automatically assume that because you can't prove it it's not true.
