example in a dispute between A and B, A will not do what B says purely on B's authority, so B invokes "the Word of God", and A complies with the wishes of B. If so, is abusing this power not something which would possibly be a driver in authoring religious doctrines, and have doctrines therefore been written which serve the authors purpose or match their personal opinion?

Historically, religion creates schisms between, not acceptance of other religious or non-religious viewpoints. Exceptions are political and economic expedience. You know, the power and greed thing - the essence of mainstream religion, especially Christianity.

Depends on how much influence the religion has on A and B. During the Middle Ages, when the Catholic church had a lot of power, it often settled disputes between parties. Same is true in Muslim countries where the religious leaders are the judges and rulers of the country.

But if the dispute is between two people who have no respect for religion, the religion would probably not be able to settle the matter. In the US, religion would have little power to settle a dispute (unless A and B decided to let it.)
