Both AVI and MP4 are file containers, that is, they support a variety of codecs (WMV, DV, H.264, etc.) . Plus, your player may support mp4 files, but maybe under a restricted picture resolution and bit rate (say, 360x240, and below 4 Mbits/s).
So, you really need to read very carefully the specs of the player and find out the following:
Max. picture resolution
Max bit rate
Supported codecs (MPEG-4, H.264, wmv, etc.)
Supported file formats
Then you will be ready to create files that can be played on your player.

I agree with dabs...if you have your user manual handy for your camera, it should tell you what formats are compatible. DVD and MP4 files are usually larger files, 3GP is usually used with mobile phones and devices, and MOV is an Apple format used with Quicktime, SWF is a file extension associated with Flash files. Hope this helps you a bit.
