I am considering a move to SoCal and wanted to get some opinions on what is a nice place to move. I am 29 with no family, enjoy outdoor activities, shopping, beach, biking, hiking, etc. I have stayed in the Aliso Viejo, Dana Point area and thought it was a really cool area. I have heard mixed opinions about L.A. and San Diego.
I basically am looking for an upscale area with low crime with people in the 20-40 year old age bracket. I like to be in or very close to restaurants, shopping, entertainment, nightlife, etc. If possible I would like to be close to the beach(5-10 mins).
Thank you

I currently live in LA, and know OC enough, but have lived in San Diego for 5 years, and I would say Pacific Beach in San Diego would be the best choice. I lived there when I was younger(I am 31 now), things are so much more laid back in San Diego, its not as much as a rat race, and isnt as crowded. Pacific Beach is upscale, Garnett Ave, has plenty of night clubs, bars, restruants, and shopping. The beach is great, and best of all people in San Diego are not as stuck up as in LA or OC. Most people are down to earth, and very friendly. I recall the days of being invited to parties and BBQs all the time, from people I didnt even know, and being welcomed as a friend. Not so much the case in LA. Its a complete different vibe. I also think the housing market in San Diego is doing much, much worse than LA, so you may be able to get a reasonably cheap place. The only reason I dont live there now, is the money is in LA for my career field, not so much in San Diego. If I could get a good paying job in San Diego, I would move back in a second.

I live in Orange County and San Diego (native san diegan but in irvine for school), and i've always preferred san diego. There's a lot more to do, and i love the small town that i live in. Honestly, though, they are basically the same thing - several rich towns surrounded by a few poor/dirty/locally-infamous towns, beaches, shopping, etc. Orange County is definitely a lot more yuppie, but i think that's mostly because of the stigma attached to towns like Laguna and Newport Beach. My heart will always lie in San Diego, though Orange County is pretty practical since it sits almost directly between LA and SD. Since you're single, though, San Diego just has a lot more going on (downtown has tons of clubs and bars, petco park, shopping is great, etc.). Overall i have mixed feelings about this question but i'm going to vote for San Diego!

I live in Escondido (in San Diego County, right next to San Diego) and love it. We have the wild animal park which is great for sight seeing, and/or a nice walk with a great view. We are also only about 1 hour away from the beach and Sea World which has great biking and hiking areas located near it. Also near us is Lake Hodges which is my favorite place for hiking and biking. It has flat and elevated areas designed for suiting your workout or enjoyment needs.

Hi, great choice on wanting to live in SoCal. That's Awesome!
-La Jolla is great is you are leaning more towards San Diego...
-Malibu is great if you are leaning towards L.A., so is Santa Monica, though it isn't as upscale as Malibu. It has lots of Shopping, etc, but alot of tourists. Especially on the 3rd street promenade. Nice area though.
-Orange County: Definetely Laguna. Lot's to do and nice area.
Good Luck. I wish you the best.

i dont think people have the illusion its cheap i think they just see it and think it would be a great place to live wich it is but dont know how epensive it can be to live here they dont think about the negatives like rent beaing a 1000 or more for a 1 bed room 4 dollars in gas 2 dollars for a coke and so on i mean i lived here all my place and its only but compared to other places its crazy expensive i would love to live some where again where i could have a 2 bedroom apt for less than 800 i would save so much money

Please move to San Diego. We have enough people in LA.
Orange County is know as the Orange Curtain for a reason. It's conservative and Republican.
