Some wondrous falacies here and some that are accurate. I will try to explain in a slightly different way. Your specific question is what are the two like on the inside. Not much difference. Single or double beds, either a steel door with a window or a door made of bars. County jail inmates either wear street clothing (waiting for court) or inmate clothing (sentenced for a misdemeanor or felony and waiting to ride out). Jails are usually enclosed within a building where prisons can vary from a large enclosed structure to what almost looks like a college campus surrounded by razor wire. Other than that, a jail is for people SENTENCED to a year or less. Prison is for felonies only ( not serious misdemeanors) who have been SENTENCED for a year and a day or more. After sentencing, the inmate will wait for a bed to become available at prison, so he or she can serve several months as a convicted felon sitting at county jail. By the time they actually ride out, they may only have a few months left. We have had several instances of an inmate coming in, getting his state number and was released the same day. I hope this clears the air a little bit and helps you.

The facilities are similar, but jail in most states are for people awaiting trial or serving time of one year or less.

Prisons may have more vocational training opportunities and recreational facilities, since the convicts are going to spend a lot more time there. Prisons are also divided into minimum, medium and maximum security facilities. White collar criminals are usually sent to a minimum security facility, which may almost seem like a hotel, even though there will be a fence around it and inmates will be locked in at night.

Maximum security prisons have two rows of high fencing topped with razor wire. The toilets have no seats and are made of stainless steel, so they can't be broken and used as a weapon. The newer prison toilets have electronically controlled valves for two reasons. 1. In the old mechanical valves, one could use a piece of dental floss and toothpaste as a grinding tool to remove the mechanical push button and gain access to a 8 long brass rod, which by filing the end down on the concrete floor could be made into a weapon. 2. When a cell block was raided for contraband, the corrections officers would shut off the water, so that the contraband could not be flushed down the toilet. However, there would still be enough pressure in the pipes to get one good flush. With the electronic controls, the toilet won't flush at all when the power to the controls is cut.

In a SuperMax prison, the convicts are usually all in solitary confinement. Prisoners sent there are either a very high escape risk or have demonstrated violence to other prisoners at less secure facilites. Their every move is watched on close circuit TV. Any time they are moved between their cell, a private exercise area, or the telephone they are handcuffed. When they are at the telephone area, they are handcuffed to the wall by one hand next to the phone.

jail is short term. like when they are havin a trial or if u got cot DUI. prison is where a judge sentenced u and you are there for a long period of time. Prison has a radio in the cell and they do little "activities" (not fun). Jail you where regular clothes and u just sit there in a cell with a toilet a sink and a bed.

Prison is for longer durations of stay and is much more "controled" , not only by the "outside" population (guards, ect.) but by the inside (inmates) population as well...

They have to be...Keeping it a win, win, situation as much as possible.

Jail is short term, up to a year usually.
The people coming and going through jail have no idea what a differance it is from prison (and should be kept that way).

Jail is on a local or county level and is for holding or sentences of less than 1 year. Prison is on a state or federal level and is for sentences of over 1 year.

PRISON VS. JAIL:
Prison and jail don't always mean the same thing. People in prison have been tried in a court and convicted of a crime. People in jail may be waiting for their trial.
