I am assistant directing a play and want to properly portray the bar of a London pub, but I don't have the means to actually go there.

You can't specify a stereotypical London pub any more. There are very few (thank god) of the "Knees up mother brown" full of east end local pubs left.
The pubs in central are cosmopolitan and frequented by many different kinds of people. The ones in north London are Greek, Italian and Indian. It all really depends on which London pub you want to recreate.

Depends where you are....I frequebt the leafy area of paddington and there are some cracking pubs around here. Now that the smoking laws have come in, most of the twits are outside freezing to death. Most pubs have their fare share of tossers but on the whole, the west london pubs are not too bad....

Just do some internet surfing - you should be able to get some shots of the standard pub interiors.
I recall lots of red velvet, open fires, jars of pickled eggs on the bar.
