My niece bred her female Yorkshire Terrier with a male Silky Terrier. Both dogs have papers, but she understands that she cannot command top dollar with the mix. Any idea what she can expect? What price range she can ask for/expect for the puppies?
Obviously not a professional breeder, she'll be selling the puppies from her New Haven County, CT home. Thank you!

Thank you for your honest responses so far. I was talking to my SIL, who thinks her daughter is going to get hundred$ for these dogs! I was almost positive that she wasn't, but needed reassurance from you all.
I'm an animal lover who will only adopt from the pound!

Hi I live in Middlesex County in CT. Well first your neice should be aware that in the state of CT it is illegal to sell pups before they are 8 weeks old. also there is a lemon law here in CT too that dogs are also covered under. so to her I would strongly suggest to have all the pups vet checked and their first shots given and dewormed. From that cost she should add maybe 50 dollars to each pup and sell them for that. I'd say no more than 75 dollars each.
Because of where she lives tell her to be very careful as to who she sells her pups too. Have them checked out so make sure they can afford the pups in the first place ok.

I wish her luck!

ADD: If she tries to sell these pups for over 200 dollars then they are subject to CT sales tax and she must add that to the selling price of each pup and it must be reported as income come tax time too. So tell her not to get greedy and sell the pups for what they are really worth and nothing more!

first has she checked into the laws in her area for selling pups.
Where I live the owner is required to have the 1st shots and wormings done. the pups aren't to be sold until 8 weeks old.
They have ot have a written guarantee for health and genetic problem.
She needs to be aware that people don't always give the best care and then sue for top dollar.
For a mix breed maybe $50 and for the most pat that is to break even after the vet care and food she has put into raising hte pups.
I hope she knows hte background to both dogs so she knows at the very least 3 generations back there has been no genetic faults as if the pup has something show up from a year from now she can be expecting a lawsuit as most people have fallen in love witht eh dog by then and now it needs $100's of dollars of surgery.
Of course all this should have been researched before breeding was even condidered.
You don't hav eot give a warranty for free pups but then who knows who might get them and what they may be used for.

Like others have said mixed breeds don't sell for much and she will need to get there first set of shots my vet charges 35.00 each to vet check each pup deworm and the first set of shots she will not be able to get her money back if she counts the money she has in the litter if they sell for $50.00 each but a lot of mix breeds are free to a good home

A mutt of the same mix is available at the local shelter for $100, so it makes no sense to sell for more than that. However, pound dogs come with microchips, full vaccinations, and spaying/neutering, so technically they come with costs covered that you would originally have had to pay yourself. So, cut down your price to $50. That's probably the most she could sell them for. After that, she should use the money she gets from the pups to have her dog spayed.

And please, please, for the love of dogkind, don't let her name her mutts "Yorkisilks" or "Silkyshires" and try to fool people into thinking they're "designer hybrids". That's just unethical.

She should figure out the cost to spay and neuter her dogs, add the costs of the first shots, and then divide that by the number of puppies she has.

$150 to spay the Yorkie +
$100 to Neuter the Silky +
$100 for the first round of shots /
7 puppies =
$50 a puppy.

And urge her to no longer be a backyard breeder.

First off... please get your dog(s) fixed ASAP. No need to keep adding to the number of dogs if you're not going to take the time to become a reputable breeder. You can take them (not sell them) to a breed-specific rescue who will take time to find the puppies good homes. They will do a screening, house check, and reference check. Just google "Chihuahua rescues in _____" (whatever state you're in). Too many dogs end up in shelters. Yes, even chihuahuas.

I totally disagree with the $50, she can get much more than that. She should however be more interested in getting good homes for the puppies. She has to recover her vet costs also. Take a look on www.livedeal.com and see what they are selling mixed breed and designer dogs for. Many people do not care about AKC papers.

The cost of the first shots and worming plus $20 to cover the cost of the spay for the female. Any mixed breed however wonderful the parents are can never be worth more.

The most she should charge for her mixed breeds is about as much as she pays for the first shots and dewormers. I would say about $50 is the most she should charge.

What was it she wanted to get out of the breeding to begin with? I find it sad that people breed their dogs just to make an extra penny.. because when breeding is done properly- money is more likely lost than made.
