Get a good .17 hmr, I like Savage 93R17 model. Cheap to shoot, about $9.00 for a box of 50, extremely accurate out to 200 yards and great for small game up to coyote size. I got one to replace the 10/22 I donated to my nephew and it is rapidly becoming one of my favs. It is a blast to shoot on targets and crows. When you hit a crow with it, all you see is a giant cloud of feathers, plus the rounds are designed to fragment on impact so no worrys about richochets. I've never been much of a target shooter but I love shooting this one so much that I'm out on the range much more than I used to be. I can shoot most of the day for around $40.00, not too bad! Put a good scope like a Mueller APV and I am getting quarter size groups at 150 yards consistently with a occasional dime size group. You can get a good Sav 93R17 for about $250.00 with the Muller APV at $115.00 for under $400.00 you will have a very nice setup.

Here's a list of potential candidates, but you need to check them out in person:

Browning Buckmark .22 (you can get a nice one for $400)
Ruger MK III .22 (same as the above)
H&R Handi Rifle .223 w/scope and bi-pod
Savage/Stevens .223 w/scope (well within the budget of $400)
Remington SPR18 (Russian-made single shot that I have thought about geting. They make one in .223) w/scope

These are samples of good deals that you can get. Some (like the SPR18) are cheap enough that even after the rings and scope you still have not blown your budget). .22lr and .223 cover a lot of territory for target and plinking and they tend to be more economical than rounds like .45ACP or .308Win.

Below are links to some and ignore MSRP (it is usually off).

Do you hunt or punch paper? Self defense? Too little here to go on.

.357 Lever action fills ALL of those bills and will do it for 250.

Happy New Year!
