You don't need much - the meat and veggies will release some liquid as they cook, which will flavor your whole dish. Browning the beef is the best thing - that really does add a lot of depth and flavor just by doing that! I only add about a cup or so of water - you can also add beer or broth - I have done all of those and they're great, too! Just be sure not to lift the lid off the crock pot very often - you want it all to cook together without releasing all the steam. And oh, yes, for some flavor add a smashed garlic clove, a bay leaf, a pinch of thyme or rosemary, and some salt and pepper! Enjoy!

It is possible to add too much water. When the meat cooks it releases it's own juices and can cause the liquid to overflow. I've done it before. I only add one cup of water-actually I use campbells french onion soup, no extra water. You want just enough to keep the meat and veggies from sticking to the bottom. You will be able to tell when the meat is done when it easily falls apart. Pot roasts before cooked are really a tough cut of meat. So you really want to cook it long enough for it to easily fall apart. It usually takes about 6-8 hours on high in my crock pot, depending on how large the roast is.

I always get rave reviews for my crockpot roast (I don't think it's that special but it does flake with a fork)--I never add water---and I never brown it. I used to and found that it wasn't necessary. I just put it in the crockpot and add sliced onions--I turn it on low before I go to bed and in the morning it is done. You can do this in the morning and for dinnertime you will have a very moist roast. With the remaining juices that form you can make gravy. Sometimes I do add vegetables (potatoes or carrots--under meat) but other times it's just the meat and onion slices---season as you wish. Bon Apetit

You don't have to add a lot of water because the meat juice will provide some liquid. But, is you have that many potatoes, I would add about a cup. Put the potatoes on the bottom, then the roast, then the other stuff around it. Good luck.

I think I would follow the recipe.i usually add a little water when I make a roast in the crock pot.You cook it with the cover on,so it will produce more juices as it cooks. If you want you can add a can of stewed tomatoes,Italian seasoning, garlic, salt and pepper as well. This recipe sounds like it needs some seasoning.

I usually add a small can of beef broth and a package of onion soup mix to my roast along with my potatoes and carrots. It makes great gravy. Put your roast on top of your vegys.

Is dependent on the context really. Which is better as a snack - fresh fruit for me personally. It's tastier and gives you that little of sweetness. Which can be better as a snack if you are trying hard to slice back on sugar and lose weight vegetables
