If you have proof of residency in Montana (driver's license) they should not be able to charge you for not having the dog spayed. They cannot demand every show dog that comes into the area to be licensed as an intact animal or spayed either.
Edit: BYBs are ugly & have small pens- great nickname.. however, no... they cannot require an animal visiting be spay/neutered.

A three year rabies shot (which always MUST be given by a vet!) is like $20 or less. I am always amazed that people are so pennywise and pound foolish. Now, as far as the spay thing goes, if you are legal residents of another state and you physically reside there, I don't see why you should be made to pay. If they really have a legal standing on this, I would offer to get your dog spayed (which it should be anyways) in exchange for the $500 ticket.

I think it is rediculous to have mandatory spay and neuter laws. I am an advocate for spay and neuter, and this DOES help prevent future unwanted litters--BUT the BIGGEST reason dogs end up in shelters is negligent ownership, untrained, spoiled or abused dogs and ignorance of breed and "type" compatability in the home. S/N is only ONE solution to the problem! There are MANY already S/N animals STILL in shelters--so S/N did not save them from the fate of being in the shelter!!!
People are ignorant, beligerant and idiotic species some times--in order for life to be tolerable and happy cohabitating with another species--IE the DOG--we need to be Alpha personalities, study up on our breeds BEFORE bringing a dog home, and not just get a puppy to get a puppy or dog to get a dog. Spaying and neutering is only PART (about 10%)of the solution, education, training, socialization and good temperment/activity/breed/type/personality compatibility is the other 90%!!!
Spayed and Neutered dogs DO make better pets
Spayed and Neutered dogs DO live out healthier happier lives
Spayed and Neutered dogs fight less when in multiple dog cercumstances
Spayed and Neutered dogs fit better in family life
BUT mandatory S/N is rediculous! We should be smart enough to know that compatibilty living with a species like a dog requires a FULL scope and understanding, and not JUST fixing them so they can't breed.

That's the price people pay for paying a vet assistant for doing what a vet should be doing....you have not proof that the shot was given, that is why your dog in locked up...poor baby......vet techs give shots all day long at a vets office, and that is great, and give their own shots to their dogs alot of times, but you chose the wrong way to do it.....under the table to keep from paying the price...
you need to find a good vet in your area...to do all your vaccinations...
you cant even get a rabies tag, legitimate by the way you did it, and now your dog is paying the price.....

You can try to fight the fine, but they don't have to make you exempt unless the law says you are. Kind of like speeding or having a radar dectector in a state where they aren't allowed. You are lucky they didn't fine you for not having a health certificate too, since you crossed state lines. Your biggest mistake was trying to save a few dollars by having someone other than a vet give your rabies shot. None of this would have happened if your dog had gotten his shot legally.

This is why the spay neuter laws are being opposed by most dog show participants.... in many cases they have no exemptions (Theretically if you DROVE TRHOUGH on the interstate in some areas your dog must be spayed) Shows are leaving those towns since none of those dogs will be spay neutered.....

Seems like it would have been cheaper just to give legit vaccines, doesnt it?
And when you visit a state, you have to abide by their rules, unless they have a loophole allowing for out of staters. You should NOT be exempt without this allowance. This should be an impetous to get your dog spayed.
If you speed in CA, you'll still have to pay a speeding ticket. If you can drive 80 in MT, it doesn't matter.
Sucks for you, but sucks worse for the dog!

fight it in court. laws on spaying should not be enforceable on out of state dogs. as for the other 25 a day, suck it up. your dog is worth it, and see if grandma will help, she should not have tried to stop fight.

Why not wear some shorts, or a skirt instead. They are easy to put on, and it feels like you're not wearing pants at all. Here in Texas, the weather is warm enough to pull it off..

If you have the ID to prove that you live in Montana then you will not have to pay for the ticket. Make sure you have ID to prove it.
