what CAN'T be done is a teacher LEADING a prayer IN PUBLIC SCHOOL that endorses a given religion; or REQUIRING children to bring a Bible. why some people have a problem with that is beyond me

Kids should be allowed to bring Bibles to school if they want to. However, I am definitely against teachers leading prayer in school. Everyone should be able to pray (or not pray) to whatever deity they choose, not be told by the teacher what to do. In my junior high school back in the '80s, we had a "moment of silence" during the morning announcements during which we could pray, think about the cute guy in the next row, or whatever. I thought it was nice, and it didn't force religion on anyone.

You have plenty of prayer outside the classroom, that isn't enough?

If a kid wants to take their bible to school, that is up to them.

But teachers taught to pray? Are teachers not people with their own views already? If they already know how to pray, than don't demean by suggesting they don't know how. And if they are not believers, don't demean by trying to make them pray and expect that they should.

Teachers are individual people, they can pray individually just like the rest of you. Should they be putting it in the classroom? No way, not unless it's a religious school...and that is always an option btw if you want religion 24/7. If you don't take that option, than don't complain.

Coming from a fellow Christinan: Great! Let's bring the Koran, a Buddah statue, and all other religious symbols and books too. You would be mad about that, right? The government allows kids to bring bibles to school and create a bible study if they wish. However, the government cannot and should not say they are believers of one particular religion. And remember, the real Christianity isn't a religion at all. It is a love. Don't EVER insult the lost in the way that you have. Jesus would find it insulting! As a Christian, you have to get to know the kids outside of the school system and teach them about God outside of the school system. It is not the government's responsibility to teach kids about God, it is our responsibility and I take it gladly!

No, no and no.

Or, picture this: right after the Christian prayer, the children can pray to Allah and then Satan. Next would be the Lord and Lady from paganism. Don't forget Zeus and Hera, Odin and Frigga, Dagda and Bridget of the Celts.....

The ENTIRE day could be taken up with prayer, just imagine! We can slide right back into the Dark Ages and do away with what the Founding Fathers wanted.

I wouldn't mind, as long as the Quran, Talmud, Baghvat Gita, Vedas, Five Classics, Satanic Bible, Daozang, and all other religious texts are permitted. In addition, I think that everyone should have the right to pray, although I don't believe it should be pressured onto anyone to pray if it isn't his/her belief.

I think when people want prayer in schools, they don't think about the non-Christians who would like to pray too. And I don't think most Christians would accept non-Christians praying in schools alongside their own children.

Just imagine how much ignorance would be wiped out if schools were inclusive of all religions and respected them in equal manners. Think of the tolerance children would develop!

Kids can bring bibles to school, they just can't use them during class time. Teachers can pray for whatever they choose on their own time when not leading their students in prayer, they cannot and should not be able to pray during class or with students. A nation without prayer is sane.

As a Catholic, I don't want religion taught in public schools. I don't want prayer there, except on an individual basis. If parents want their children to get religious education at school, they should send them to private schools run by their churches. I don't want my kids learning religion from a Baptist because we don't believe the same things, and that Baptist doesn't want me teaching her kids either.

If Christians can't agree on matters of religion, how can we have prayer that non-Christian families can accept?

I'm all for the Bible, but even the Bible says there is a time and place for eveything. (Eccl 3:1-8)
At Mark 12:17, Jesus said: "Pay back Caesar's things to Caesar, but God's things to God."
Ideally, religious instruction should be taught at home by the parents. Public schools are Government entities. Governments are not MEANT to be Godly, that's why Jesus made the distinction.

Teachers "taught" to pray? You mean forced regardless of their religion and free choice thereof? That would be a big "no".

Should children be able to bring Bibles to school. Yes, if they wish.
